![]() Making Athletics GreenEuropean Athletics has demonstrated its leadership and commitment to sustainability by launching a long-term project to raise awareness about environmental and social responsibility within the sport. It has made the state-of-the-art Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit (SSET) – an online “how to” guide for incorporating best practice into the planning and delivery of sports events - available to all Member Federations and event organisers in Europe, free of charge. This initiative will be followed up with dissemination of additional information on sustainability, seminars and incentives for event organisers. The aim of the project is to make athletics events at all levels as green and sustainable as possible. What is Sustainability?Sustainability is about our responsibility to protect the environment and contribute to society, both of which are core values of European Athletics. With its high participation and visibility, athletics has an opportunity to lead the world of sport on this increasingly important issue.Apart from doing the right thing, event organisers who demonstrate a commitment to sustainability stand to benefit from improved public image and profile, increased resources from image–conscious sponsors and public authorities, and reduced costs through improved efficiency. What is the SSET?The SSET provides a framework, guidelines and a growing information database that make it possible for any athletics event - in stadium, road race, cross country or mountain running - to easily manage and benefit from activities that impact its physical and social environment. The SSET has been created by the Lausanne-based International Academy of Sports Science and Technology (AISTS) and the Organising Committee for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver (VANOC) with support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Events Scotland and European Athletics. How can I learn more about the SSET?You can see an explanatory brochure and access the tool by clicking here. |
