Stars of Europe honoured in Arona

The 2011 European Athletics Awards Night presented by MONDO in Arona once again proved to be very successful thanks, in no small part, to the efforts of the team of the local organisers and the Spanish athletics federation (RFEA).

An action packed year that included the European Athletics Indoor Championships and the World Championships among a host of other championships produced a number of contenders for the coveted awards.

After thousands of votes were cast, Great Britain's Mo Farah, the 5000m world champion and 10,000m silver medallist and 800m world champion MariyaSavinova of Russia emerged as Europe's finest athletes of the year.

The great honour of being named the winners of the European Athletics Rising Star Awards fell to Germany's shot put sensation and world champion David Storl and British sprint prodigy Jodie Williams. These awards recognised their spectacular performances throughout 2011.

All the winners were presented with their awards by European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz at a special European Athletics Awards Night presented by MONDO, organised during the European Athletics Convention in Arona, Spain.

British super star Farah was unable to attend the Gala due to his training commitment, IAAF vice president and London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe received the award on his behalf.

European Athletics wishes to thank MONDO and looks forward to an exciting partnership in the coming years.
