Maria Perez might have had a 2022 season to forget having been disqualified at the World and European Athletics Championships but there will be high expectations when she lines up in the 35km race walk at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady on 21 May.
After her annus horribilis, the 2018 European champion has bounced back strongly this year by smashing her national record at the Spanish 20km Race Walking Championships in Cordoba with a world leading time of 1:25:30.
&ldquo;After those setbacks I needed to reset and refresh mentally so I resumed my training in October but I did running instead of walking. It was only by the end of December that I began my usual race walking sessions once I felt psychologically ready after several tough months,&rdquo; said Perez in an exclusive interview with European Athletics.
More than one month on and Perez is still surprised by that clocking, the fastest ever non-Russian time recorded by a European race walker in the history of the event.&nbsp;
&ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t expect such a quick time at that early stage of the season since we had barely done quality work; I only remember doing a couple of reps sessions (10x1000m and 6x2000m) but I also knew I had that kind of time in my legs after all the hard work done the previous years,&rdquo; she said.

Looking ahead to the European Race Walking Team Championships, statistics play in the favour of the 27-year-old. She came sixth in 2017 and second in 2021 on her previous appearances in the 20km race walk in Podebrady but Perez prefers to take a cautious approach.&nbsp;
&ldquo;To be honest, I&rsquo;m not aiming to win or to smash any records, my two goals in Podebrady are just to romp home and show all the technical work we have done over the last months,&rdquo; said Perez.
The Spaniard is an accomplished performer at both the 20km and 35km race walk distances but Perez explains why she is planning to contest the longer of the two distances in Podebrady.&nbsp;
&ldquo;After my good performance in C&oacute;rdoba we decided to work on my stamina and mileage as I plan to double up at the World Athletics Championships this summer. I am averaging over 125 kilometres per week with some peaks of 135 kilometres at the most,&rdquo; said Perez, who is the European record-holder at the longer distance with 2:39:16 time set last year.
The upcoming European Race Walking Team Championships will be Perez&rsquo;s fourth race over the longer distance but her first internationally in an event which only made its debut on the major championships programme last summer.
&ldquo;To be honest, I haven&rsquo;t got any hint on what type of race we&rsquo;ll have in Podebrady, let&rsquo;s see how the race develops,&rdquo; said Perez.
&ldquo;We shouldn&rsquo;t forget that it&rsquo;s a team championship so the primary goal will be to win the gold medal for my country alongside my teammates but Italy, Greece [gold and silver medallists in 2021], Ukraine and France have strong specialists,&rdquo; said Perez.

Perez will meet up with them again in just over a week on a circuit which is of her liking. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a beautiful circuit, quite broad except for the final stages when it narrows; in addition there are a lot of trees in the park which give shade for much of the race. I really enjoy walking in Podebrady,&rdquo; she said.
<h2>"Fiercest rival but also the best teammate"</h2>
Unlike Perez, her compatriot Raquel Gonzalez enjoyed the season of her life in the 35km race walk in 2022 with a fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Championships and a silver medal at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich.
&ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t pick one performance over the other; to be fifth at a world level is amazing but a medal is a medal and that&rsquo;s what every athlete fights for. After those results I feel more ambitious,&rdquo; said Gonzalez, who was also crowned women's Spanish Athlete of the Year for 2022.

Boosted by such a brilliant campaign, Gonzalez spent over one month early this year in Australia &ndash; Canberra and Perisher Valley &ndash; to take part in the Supernova 7 training camp alongside other elite walkers such as Greece&rsquo;s double European champion Antigoni Ntrismpioti who will contest the 20km race walk in Podebrady.
&ldquo;The topic of the experiment was to study the altitude training effect on the haemoglobin of female walkers; we also followed a very specific diet program, combining a high energy intake over the first two weeks and a low energy intake for the last week,&rdquo; explained Gonzalez.
The 33-year-old is looking forward to returning to Podebrady two years after a performance which left her with mixed emotions.
"Today I have a very positive memory as we managed the 20km gold medal as a team but believe me when I tell you, I had a bittersweet feeling for some time as I missed an individual medal and also a lifetime best for barely one second,&rdquo; recalls Gonzalez, who came fourth in 1:28:37, tantalisingly close to her lifetime best which dates back to 2014.
Thinking about the upcoming 2023 edition, the Madrid-based walker said: &ldquo;We have a very powerful squad and definitely we&rsquo;ll go for team gold, that&rsquo;s for sure&rdquo;.&nbsp;
Asked on whether her fellow Spaniard Maria Perez should be regarded as her main opponent individually, Gonzalez says adamantly: &ldquo;Of course, Maria will be both the fiercest rival but also the best teammate&rdquo;.&nbsp;
Having raced over the shorter distances - 5km, 10km, 20km - so far this campaign, Podebrady will mark Gonzalez&rsquo;s first appearance over 35km distance this season but far from hesitating on her outcome, she&rsquo;s fully determined to perform well.
The Spaniard boasts a 2:42:27 career best for the event but she&rsquo;s reluctant to reply when asked what kind of clocking we can expect from her on this occasion.
"That would be giving advantage to my rivals!" she laughs.&nbsp;

"I am very grateful to my parents and my coaches who taught me how to express myself through sport. I would be a very unhappy person if I didn't have the chance to feel all the strong emotions and life lessons that I have experienced during my career. "If you receive so much, you must be prepared to give back as well. It always feels special to spend time with kids from my club and I realise how small gestures can make them so happy. &ldquo;My journey with athletics began as a small girl who was shy and introverted. However, thanks to this sport, I turned into a person open to the world, curious to learn new things and full of self-confidence.
"Perhaps the most important aspect of my sporting life is the fact that, thanks to training and trips, I had the opportunity to make friends with people from all over the world and learn about the customs and cultures of other countries.

"My sporting path began with childhood dreams, and I know that every child who starts his or her adventure with any sport should have the courage to dream of great things. Because it is these dreams and passion that lead us on the path of success and fulfilment.&rdquo;

&ldquo;I always loved sports as a child. In elementary school, I loved athletics and basketball. I didn&rsquo;t even know what a hammer throw was, but I liked sprinting, long jump and throwing a jerk ball. I watched track and field events on TV, like the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships, and I watched relay races (4 x 400m) the most.
&ldquo;I started to do athletics at 16 years old and, to be honest, it wasn't my dream to throw a hammer! So, I started to train for shot put and discus throw. When I started to train for hammer throw at the age of 17, my dream was to win medals at the Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships and European Athletics Championships, but I was not dreaming of a world record back then. However, thanks to lots of hard work, here I am today with many medals and a world record of 82.98m!

"What would I say to young athletes? First of all, training should be a lot of fun. For me, from the beginning of my sports career to today I have gone to training with great joy! Also, in difficult moments, don't give up - keep fighting. Dream and fight for those dreams. And most importantly, remember that to become a champion in your event you have to give 100 percent, with your whole heart in training and you will see the results.&rdquo;

&ldquo;When I was really young, I wasn&rsquo;t actually sure I was going to be any good at athletics because everything was really short at junior school and I wasn&rsquo;t very fast at all!
&ldquo;But everything changed when I went to senior school at 11 and we were able to go a bit further. I did cross country and ran 400m and that&rsquo;s how I ended up joining the athletics club. The athletics club was great and I&rsquo;d meet my friends two to three times a week, almost like a youth club.
&ldquo;But what really got me hooked was the very first race I ran for the club. It was a big event (which I didn&rsquo;t realise!) in South Shields where the Great North Run now finishes. There were a few stars of the day, like Brendan Foster and Dave Bedford, who I had seen on TV, but there were also about 10,000 people who turned up to run on a May Bank Holiday weekend, with the sun shining.

&ldquo;I ran my first mile race, and I had no idea how I was going to do, but I finished second and I just thought every athletics meeting was like that. It had an incredible atmosphere, so many people watching, and I won prizes, which I&rsquo;d never done in football or anything else... I won an ornamental cannon and a set of cufflinks (which every 11-year-old really needs)!
&ldquo;But those were prized possessions for a long time &ndash; the cannon sat on my mum&rsquo;s mantelpiece at home for many, many years because that was my first ever prize in athletics.
"And that&rsquo;s what got me hooked &ndash; the atmosphere, being on my own rather than part of a team &ndash; and from that point on the athletics club became my second home!&rdquo;

&ldquo;My childhood athletics memories are very special to me. I was very lucky to have supportive parents and grandparents as well as teachers at school. Indeed, when we moved due to my dad&rsquo;s job, he spent a lot of time researching the best athletics clubs in the area and found Alex and Rosemary Stanton at Bedford.
"They guided me through my career and the foundations were laid in a lot of fun training and racing with my teammates at Bedford and County A.C. We learned how to get the best from ourselves, to push ourselves and to work together as a team.

Stars share their childhood memories to celebrate Kids' Athletics Day!

European Athletics is saddened to hear of the death of Ukraine's Olympic and European champion Vira Krepkina at the age of 90 on Tuesday (25).
Krepkina, the USSR 100m champion in 1957 and 1958, competed at the 1952, 1956 and 1960 Olympics; making the semifinals of the 100m and then finishing fourth as part of the USSR quartet in the 4x100m in both Helsinki and Melbourne.
However, having just missed the&nbsp; out on the medals in her first two Olympic outings, she caused a huge surprise by taking the long jump gold at Rome 1960 before, once again, going out in the 100m semi-finals and finishing fourth in the 4x100m.
In Rome, Krepkina led after three rounds with 6.22m and clinched the gold medal with her fourth round leap of 6.37m, an Olympic record and the second best mark in the world at the time, to defeat Poland's 1956 champion Elzibieta Krzesińska who reached 6.27m in the final round for the silver medal.
Few people had expected Krepkina to strike gold in Rome not least because she had only taken up the event seriously about 18 months before.
In addition, she had a falling out with Soviet athletics officials despite winning the long jump at the 1959 USA v USSR dual international and she was controversially added to the Soviet long jump trio in Rome only after the personal intervention of the Head of the USSR State Sports Committee Yuri Romanov.
Before Rome, Krepkina had generally competed internationally in the 100m and won two European golds in the 4x100m (1954 and 1958) as well as the 100m silver medal in 1958.
She also equalled the 100m world record of 11.3 in Kyiv in 1958 and held that accolade until the American sprinter Wilma Rudolph improved the world record to 11.2 in 1961.

"Other long jumpers did not take me seriously. I didn't have a perfect technique: I just ran, but I rarely stepped over the board. I caught on to it and flew. My abs were strong, thanks to my high-level gymnastic and acrobatic preparation. That's how I won that gold medal in Rome and set the Olympic record of 6.37m," Krepkina said of her Rome performance.
By a curious coincidence, Krepkina was assigned bib number 159 and her height was also 159cm. Following the Games, this number adorned the wall in her apartment in Kyiv.
Despite everything, Krepkina did not boast of her successes.
Once, during a greeting on her 80th birthday, she said: "I can realise that people are proud of me. But I still don't know why I should be proud of myself." She added that her most significant achievement in her life was not medals but the help she and her husband provided to orphans.
European Athletics would like to send its condolences and sympathies to her friends, family and the wider Ukrainian athletics community.

Olympic and European champion Vira Krepkina dies at the age of 90

Ukraine has named a strong team for the European Athletics Team Championships in Silesia from 20-25 including reigning European champions Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk.
The European Athletics Team Championships forms part of the European Games programme and all three divisions of the competition will be held under one roof for the first time in event history.
Ukraine were relegated to Division 2 after withdrawing from the 2021 European Athletics Team Championships due to coronavirus concerns but they will be the resounding favourites to secure promotion back into the top flight of the biennial competition.
Unbeaten this season, Mahuchikh is predicted to win maximum points in the high jump while European triple jump champion Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk will contest both the long jump and triple jump in Silesia.
European 400m hurdles silver medallist Viktoriya Tkachuk has been given the nod in her specialist event and she will join forces with European 400m hurdles bronze medallist Anna Ryzhykova in the inaugural staging of the mixed 4x400m relay.
Ukraine will also be strong in the men&rsquo;s throwing events with Artur Felfner (javelin), Roman Kokoshko (shot put) and Mykhaylo Kokhan (hammer) named on the team.&nbsp;
Division 2 of the European Athletics Team Championships occupies the three evening sessions between 20-22 June. European indoor 60m hurdles champion Reetta Hurske broke the Finnish record in the 100m hurdles at the Jyvaskyla Motonet GP on Wednesday (7), one of a spree of national records to fall at midweek World Athletics Continental Tour events across Europe.
Hurske sped to a Finnish record of 12.70 in the 100m hurdles heats in this World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze event before winning the final in 12.80 ahead of India&rsquo;s Jyothi Yarraji in 12.95.

Other notable performances in Jyvaskyla included Norway&rsquo;s Thomas Mardal winning the hammer with 76.15m and former European indoor 60m silver medallist Lotta Kemppinen winning the 100m in 11.43.
<h2>Two national records for Takacs</h2>
At the Hungarian GP, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, in Budapest on Thursday (8), 21-year-old Boglarka Takacs broke two Hungarian records in the space of one hour, winning the 100m in 11.23 and the 200m in 22.77.
Takacs also has the distinction of becoming the first Hungarian sprinter to break the 23 second-barrier in the 200m, smashing the previous national record of 23.01 which was set by Iren Orosz back in 1981.
Other notable results from the Hungarian contingent included Diana Lesti winning the long jump with 6.75m, Grete Kerekes winning the 100m hurdles in 12.96 and Attila Molnar winning the 400m in 45.10.
<h2>10.08 for Fuchs in St Polten</h2>
Markus Fuchs highlighted the Liese Prokop Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger meeting, in St. Polten by improving his Austrian 100m record to 10.08, the fourth fastest time by a European sprinter in 2023.&nbsp;

There was also an Austrian record for Lena Pressler who finished second in the 400m hurdles in 56.15 behind Morocco&rsquo;s Noura Ennadi.
Elsewhere, there were popular home wins for national record-holders Lukas Weisshaidinger in the discus (63.61m) and Victoria Hudson in the javelin (59.81m).&nbsp;&nbsp;
All of the leading Austrians are expected to feature on their team at the European Athletics Team Championships in Silesia with the 3rd Division occupying the morning sessions between 20-22 June.
<h2>Askag and Diaz in form in the horizontal jumps</h2>
At the Copenhagen Athletics Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, on Wednesday (7) double European U20 champion Maja Askag from Sweden was one of the standout European performers.
Askag, 20, won the long jump with a lifetime best of 6.66m and she was also credited with a marginally wind-aided 6.70m. Iceland&rsquo;s Daniel Ingi Egilsson won the men&rsquo;s long jump, also with a lifetime best of 7.92m.&nbsp;

At the JBL Jump Fest in Kosice, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze event, on Thursday (8) Andy Diaz produced the standout performance in the triple jump, winning with 17.20m.
Diaz broke the Italian record held by his coach Fabrizio Donato with 17.75m in Florence last week but the Cuban-born 27-year-old is yet to receive clearance to represent his adopted nation internationally.&nbsp;
Radek Juska also won the long jump with 7.96m ahead of former European indoor triple jump champion Nazim Babayev with 7.80m.&nbsp;

European discus bronze medallist Lawrence Okoye is one of the standout names on a British team which combines youth and experience for the European Athletics Team Championships in Silesia from 20-25 June. 
The European Athletics Team Championships forms part of the European Games programme in Krakow-Malopolska and the 1st Division will be the focal point of the championships from 23-25 June.
Aside from Okoye, the British team features a scattering of fellow medal winners from Munich 2022 including Jeremiah Azu, who won 100m bronze and 4x100m gold in Munich, and Alex Haydock-Wilson who also came away with bronze and gold from the 400m and 4x400m.&nbsp;

In what could be a near-repeat of the European final, Azu could line up alongside reigning European and Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs who has expressed his keenness to compete for Italy in the 1st Division.
Great Britain finished third in the team standings at the 2021 edition which was also held in Silesia and their team includes some repeat winners including Lina Nielsen in the 400m hurdles and Ellie Baker who steps up to the 1500m having won the 800m in 2021.&nbsp;
With Baker stepping up to the 1500m, Issy Boffey will be seeking victory in the 800m to go alongside her gold medals at the European Athletics U18, U20 and U23 Championships.&nbsp;
Other prospective winners in Silesia include in-form British middle distance runners Ben Pattison and George Mills in the 800m and 1500m respectively.&nbsp;

The final entries for all divisions of the European Athletics Team Championships will be published next week. All three divisions will be streamed live through the European Athletics channel from 20-25 June.

Norway&rsquo;s Jakob Ingebrigtsen began what was a night of records by shattering the long-standing world best in the two miles in the Paris Diamond League on Friday (9) evening.&nbsp;
The world best of 7:58.61 had stood to Kenya&rsquo;s Daniel Komen since 1997 but Ingebrigtsen took a sledgehammer to the venerable record, crossing the finish-line in a sold out Charlety Stadium in 7:54.10.
The pacemakers took Ingebrigtsen beyond the two kilometre mark ahead of record pace but the Norwegian still had at least another gear left at his disposal. The 22-year-old covered the 800m between 2400-3200m in 1:53.6 which put ample distance between himself and the wavelights which were set to world record pace.

&ldquo;Being able to make this record feels amazing. It is my first world best outdoors. The pace felt very smooth for me, coming out of the 1500m. I would say it was a good race. The public was amazing, without their help, it would have been more difficult. I was a bit surprised about the time in the end,&rdquo; said Ingebrigtsen.
Among his many accolades, Ingebrigtsen holds the world indoor 1500m record (3:30.60) as well as European outdoor records in the 1500m (3:28.23) and 5000m (12:48.45). His 3000m split tonight was timed at 7:23.8 which is also faster than the European record of 7:24.68.
Ingebrigtsen will be back in action next Thursday when he headlines the 1500m. Will the record books be rewritten once again?
In her first race since retaining her European indoor title, Keely Hodgkinson was left incredulous by her performance in the 800m.
Having dealt with some niggles since the indoor season, Hodgkinson was coy about her prospects on the eve of her season's debut but she looked in complete command as she powered to victory in a world lead of 1:55.77, shaving 0.11 from her British record and European U23 record which she set at the Tokyo Olympics where she won silver.

&ldquo;I am a little bit shocked that I ran so fast,&rdquo; said Hodgkinson. &ldquo;The weather was really nice, so warm. I had heard good things about the track. With this full stadium and the great crowd, it was amazing. I am so happy. Now the aim is to stay healthy, we still have to see, I want to keep running fast. The focus is on the summer, on Budapest.&rdquo;
On the road to Budapest, Hodgkinson has said she could race in the 400m at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo in July to sharpen up in a bid for her first global title at the World Athletics Championships.

As athletes have been preparing for action on the track, 16 young journalists from 11 European countries have joined them in the build-up to the Wanda Diamond League&rsquo;s Golden Gala meeting in Florence this week, attending a three-day programme as part of the Media Development Project (MDP).
The MDP is a media education programme organised by World Athletics to coincide with one-day events to encourage athletics journalism in particular areas around the world, and bring more young writers into the sport. Last year&rsquo;s edition was organised in Nairobi as an opportunity for young African journalists.
This year&rsquo;s course has been organised in Europe in cooperation with European Athletics, the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) and the Golden Gala organising committee.
The attendees, aged up to 30, have come from 11 countries that are organising events in Europe in the next few years, including Italy, Ukraine, Slovakia, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Poland, Finland, Portugal, France and T&uuml;rkiye.

The participants attended a number of sessions on writing, editing and media coverage, along with sessions on the ethics of athletics, communications activities of World Athletics and European Athletics, the use of statistics and flash quotes production.
The AIPS was represented by Riccardo Romani, AIPS Young Reporters mentor and an experienced journalist, who spoke about the challenges of the profession, while representatives of World Athletics and European Athletics also briefed the young journalists about the structure of the sport and the resources available to them to assist in their reporting on athletics.
Presentations about the Wanda Diamond League 2023 Golden Gala event along with the upcoming Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships were also part of the programme. In addition, participants were offered an exclusive opportunity to interview European pole vault champion Wilma Murto, and to cover all aspects of the Diamond League meeting, including the pre-event press conference and athlete interviews in the mixed zone.
The media plays an incredibly important role in our sport, bringing the emotion and excitement of athletics, as well as results, images, interviews and analysis, to the eyes and ears of millions who cannot attend competitions in person. This is why these organisations have committed resources to support the next generation of athletics journalists through the Media Development Project.

This week, the European Athletics CEO Conference was held for the first time since 2018, bringing together CEOs, directors and general secretaries from our Member Federations.
Although it is normally held every two years, this was the first time the event has been held for five years due to the pandemic. In total, 78 people from 43 Member Federations attended this latest edition, held in Belchin, Bulgaria, from 23-24 May.
The event is held as part of European Athletics&rsquo; Member Federation Networking and Education Programme, alongside convention workshops, the Member Federations Leaders Forum, and the Communication Managers Seminar. The objective of the whole programme is to provide learning opportunities and a networking environment to strengthen the athletics community in Europe.

Attendees in Belchin heard from European Athletics CEO Christian Milz and World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon who opened the proceedings on day one with a discussion about the future of athletics. This was followed by an insightful presentation on leadership in times of crisis by leadership coach C&eacute;line Beaurain.
On day two, Running Unit Director at European Athletics, Marko Vasic, was joined by Golazo CEO, Bob Verbeeck, and Head of Running at World Athletics, Alessio Punzi, for a discussion on all things running. Finally, European Athletics Deputy CEO, C&eacute;lia Mendes, was joined by safe sport specialist Mathilde Grenet as well as Donna Fraser OBE - former World and European Athletics medallist and Director of Equality Diversity and Inclusion at the Professional Cricketers Association - for a talk on governance, safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
There was also time to discuss European Athletics&rsquo; strategy, take part in team-building sessions, and each day began with morning running, yoga, stretching and outdoor gym sessions &ndash; so it was a busy couple of days for everyone involved!

Building a stronger athletics community: CEO conference held for the first time since 2018
