Skotheim tallies 6281 points for heptathlon victory in Tallinn

Vicente scores world pentathlon lead of 4728 points on her combined events comeback in Aubière

European silver medal winning heptathlete Adrianna Sulek opened her indoor campaign in winning style, taking the women&rsquo;s pentathlon at the Indoor Combined Events in Tallinn on 4-5 February. &nbsp;
The World indoor silver medallist laid down a solid marker ahead of next month&rsquo;s European Indoor Championships in Istanbul with victory in a world leading 4702 points. &nbsp;
The World Athletics Combined Events Tour Silver meeting was rich in quality with Norway&rsquo;s combined events prospect Sander Skotheim smashing the national record in the men&rsquo;s heptathlon with 6255 points. &nbsp;

It is the first time any Norwegian has scored more than 6000 points in the men&rsquo;s indoor heptathlon and the 20-year-old, who placed seventh in the decathlon at last year&rsquo;s European Athletics Championships, must now be considered a real contender in Istanbul. &nbsp;
It was the second highest score in the Europe this year behind only Switzerland&rsquo;s world decathlon bronze medallist Simon Ehammer who logged 6292 a week earlier in Aubi&eacute;re, France. &nbsp;
Home hero Maicel Uibo placed second with 6120 points. It was the second highest heptathlon score of the world decathlon silver medallist&rsquo;s career and marked a celebratory weekend after it was announced he is expecting his first child with his wife, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, double Olympic champion over 400m. &nbsp;
Third place went to Edgaras Benkunska in a new Lithuanian national record of 5937 points. The podium in the women&rsquo;s pentathlon was completed by Finland&rsquo;s world under 20 heptathlon champion Saga Vanninen with 4541 points and 16-year-old Jana Ko&scaron;cak who set a new Croatian record with 4432 points.&nbsp;
<h2>Schrub reigns in Spain</h2>
France&rsquo;s European 10,000m bronze medallist Yann Schrub triumphed at the latest leg of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour in Calzadilla, Spain on Sunday (5). &nbsp;
Bright sun greeted the athletes at the Gran Premio C&aacute;ceres Campo a Traves meeting, but it was Shrub who shone brightest, taking command around two-third of the way through the men&rsquo;s 10k event. &nbsp;
Belgium&rsquo;s Isaac Kimeli gave chase and ran shoulder to shoulder in the latter stages, but could not respond when Schrub produced a decisive final surge to win in 27:43. Kimeli faded to third in 27:55 as Uruguay&rsquo;s Santiago Catrof split the European pair in second in 27:49.&nbsp;
The women&rsquo;s 10km race saw Dutch duo Veetle Bakken and Silken Jonkman enjoy a spirited battle against with Kenyan Nancy Chepleting, before succumbing. The Kenyan won in 32:41, six seconds ahead of Bakken with Jonkman fading in the latter stages to placed fourth behind Spain&rsquo;s Laura Luengo who clocked 32:52. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Weekend roundup | World pentathlon lead for Sulek in Tallinn

Switzerland&rsquo;s Simon Ehammer and Adrianna Sulek from Poland will target back-to-back victories at the X-Athletics Combined Events meeting in Aubi&egrave;re in France on 28-29 January, the first World Athletics Combined Events Tour Silver meeting of 2023.&nbsp;
Ehammer won at this meeting last year with a Swiss record of 6285 points, leaping out to 8.26m in the long jump en route to a victory which was followed by medals in all three major championships in 2022.&nbsp;

Ehammer went on to improve his Swiss heptathlon record to 6363 points at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade where he won silver behind Damian Warner before he came away with long jump bronze at the World Athletics Championships and decathlon silver at the European Athletics Championships.
Not only did Ehammer win the heptathlon in Aubiere last year, he also led a Swiss 1-2-3 in the heptathlon while Sulek won the pentathlon with 4569 points ahead of Spain&rsquo;s Maria Vicente with 4495 points.
And a sizeable Swiss contingent will be making the journey to Aubiere again later this month with the aim of securing a spot in the combined events fields at the Istanbul 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 2-5 March.
Finley Gaio, who finished third behind Ehammer last year, will be contesting the heptathlon in Aubiere while former world U18 champion Geraldine Ruckstuhl continues her comeback from injury in the pentathlon.&nbsp;
Like Ehammer, Sulek used her victory in Aubiere as a springboard to a breakthrough season which saw her break Polish records in both the pentathlon (4851 points) and the heptathlon (6672 points).

The indefatigable Pole competed in no fewer than nine pentathlon or heptathlon competitions in 2022 and the 23-year-old was a pillar of consistency throughout the season, finishing first or second in eight of those nine competitions. She was deservedly crowned the winner of the World Athletics Combined Events Tour as well.
Sulek had a particularly auspicious season in the major championships. Like Ehammer, Sulek won silver medals at the World Indoor Championships and European Athletics Championships and also finished fourth in the World Athletics Championships with a national record score of 6672 points.

Ehammer and Sulek seek back-to-back combined events victories in Aubière

Switzerland&rsquo;s 2019 European U20 decathlon champion Simon Ehammer tallied a sizeable heptathlon score at the X-Athletics Meeting in Aubiere in France this weekend (29-30), a World Indoor Tour Bronze meeting.
His overall tally of 6285 points was both a world lead as well as a Swiss record. Still only 21, his score has only been bettered at U23 level globally by Ashton Eaton and Kevin Mayer, the previous and current world decathlon record-holders.
Ehammer set himself up for a big score by leaping out to an incredible 8.26m in the long jump to rack up 1128 points. This mark was both a world lead and a Swiss record in its own right as well as a world heptathlon best, displacing the previous mark of 8.16m set by Eaton en route to his still-standing world record of 6645 points.

Ehammer led overnight by almost 300 points with 3600 points and he opened his second day in lifetime best form, clocking 7.74 in the 60m hurdles to finish 0.01 behind Mayer who was competing in selected events as part of his build-up to the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
The pole vault proved to be Ehammer&rsquo;s undoing during the last indoor season when he no-heighted in two competitions - including the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun when he was in medal contention - but the Swiss athlete came one event closer to his senior combined events breakthrough by clearing 5.03m on his third attempt for his second lifetime best of the day.
Ehammer concluded his competition by clocking 2:54.68 in the 1000m which brought his total up to 6285 points. He broke his Swiss record by 193 points and also eclipsed the previous world lead set one day earlier in the United States by Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Ayden Owens by 13 points.

Ehammer also led Switzerland to a 1-2-3 with Andri Oberholzer (5960 points) and Finley Gaio (5838 points) rounding off the podium.
Reigning European U23 heptathlon champion Adrianna Sulek from Poland also achieved a world leading score of 4569 points in the pentathlon to defeat Spain&rsquo;s Maria Vicente (4495 points) and Leonie Cambours (4457 points). 
In fourth, Sveva Gerevini set an Italian record of 4434 points.

Stanek turns tables on Thomsen; meeting records for Gambetta and Carmoy in Nehvizdy
European indoor champion Tomas Stanek produced a home victory at the Hvezdy V Nehvizdech, a World Indoor Tour Silver meeting, just outside the Czech capital Prague on Sunday (30) evening.
In a competition which is named after the legendary Helena Fibingerova who was in attendance, Stanek laid down a marker in the first round with 20.91m which stood the test of the next five rounds. In doing so, Stanek turned the tables on Norway&rsquo;s Marcus Thomsen who had defeated Stanek three days prior in Kladno.
Thomsen had to settle for second with 20.68m while Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina&rsquo;s Mesud Pezer was third in a season&rsquo;s best of 20.47m. The top six throwers all surpassed the 20 metre-line.

Germany&rsquo;s Sara Gambetta also won the women&rsquo;s shot put with her opening throw of the competition which landed at both a meeting record as well as outright lifetime best of 18.90m.&nbsp;
The former heptathlete won ahead of Canada&rsquo;s Sarah Mitton (18.65m) and teammate Katharina Maisch (18.56m) with European indoor silver medallist Fanny Roos from Sweden fourth with 18.44m. Contuining her farewell tour, former world and European champion Christina Schwanitz from Germany finished fifth but improved her season's best to 17.94m.&nbsp;
Belgium&rsquo;s Thomas Carmoy took a surprise victory over soon-to-be Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy last year and the former European U20 champion ensured back-to-back wins with a meeting record clearance of 2.27m.
Carmoy won on countback from Malaysia&rsquo;s Nauraj Singh Randhawa with the precocious JuVaughn Harrison, who reached the Olympic final in both the long jump and high jump in Tokyo last year, third on his European debut with 2.23m.
