German stars confirmed for Rehlingen

Great Britain&rsquo;s George Mills continued his fine end-of-season form as he clocked a world-leading 3:49.64 over the mile in the German city of Pfungstadt on Wednesday.
Mills. the 2016 European U18 800m champio, sliced almost six seconds off his personal best over the classic distance and follows on from his 3:30.95 1500m best at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich a week ago.
Behind Mills, the Netherlands&rsquo; Noah Baltus, seventh in the 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships 1500m arguably ran the best race of his life with 3:52.47 for second place ahead of France&rsquo;s Artur Gervais in third with 3:53.17, both men running over the mile for the first time.
Italy&rsquo;s oldest one-day meeting, the Palio Citta della Quercia in Rovereto saw a spate of excellent European performances including local shot put star and 2013 European indoor champion Zane Weir reaching 21.88m for a meeting record in his specialist event.

Weir wasn't quite in the same scintillating form that saw him reach 22.44m in Padua on Sunday - the best distance by a European shot putter for 34 years - but it was still good enough to beat fellow Italian and World Athletics Championships silver medallist Leonardo Fabbri, who was second with 21.35m.
Other Italian wins at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting came courtesy of Andy Diaz, won took the triple jump with 17.03m and Catalin Tecuceanu&rsquo;s 800m win in 1:45.25.&nbsp;
Great Britain&rsquo;s Molly Caudery, fifth in Budapest, cleared 4.58m to win the pole vault while another British win in the field events came from Tokyo Olympic Games high jump finalist Tom Gale who won with 2.23m in his first competition for more than two years after a challenging series of injuries.
Great Britain&rsquo;s Laviai Nielsen took the 400m in 51.51 while Sarah Lavin returned to her better-known event after setting an Irish 100m record of 11.27 over the border in Bellinzona on Monday and won the100m hurdles in a meeting record of 12.76 (+0.9).

Great Britain's Mills goes to the top of the world in the mile

Femke Bol from the Netherlands was in victorious form once again at the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, on Monday (4).
The world champion was pushed by Shamier Little from the United States who was neck-and-neck with Bol until the tenth barrier when Bol moved up a gear, pulling away off the final hurdle for victory in a meeting record of 52.79 ahead of Little (53.64) who was also under the Dutchwoman&rsquo;s previous meeting record of 54.01 from 2021.
Bol remains unbeaten in both the 400m and 400m hurdles since the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon where Sydney McLaughlin shattered the world record with 50.68. Her next race will be the 400m hurdles in the Brussels Diamond League on Friday (7).
Fellow world discus champion Daniel Stahl took another victory over his predecessor Kristjan Ceh albeit by a narrow margin. Stahl took the lead in the second round with 67.24m which narrowly survived Ceh&rsquo;s fourth round attempt of 67.15m.&nbsp;
However, world high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi had to settle for fourth in the high jump with 2.24m, only missing out on the victory on countback. The top five jumpers all cleared 2.24m but Ukrainian veteran Andrii Protsenko was the only athlete who managed a clear card up until that height and took the victory outright.
Other significant performances included Brit Imani Lansiquot breaking the 11 second-barrier for the first time in the 100m in 10.99 to finish second behind multiple Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah who is racing herself back into shape with 10.92 and two-time European U20 champion Audrey Werro finishing third in the 800m in 1:58.13.
In one of her final races in the junior ranks, Werro moves up to fourth on the European U20 all-time list behind Keely Hodgkinson (1:55.88) and East Germans Hildegard Ullrich (1:57.45) and Katrin Wuhn (1:57.86).

World champion Bol smashes her meeting record with 52.79 in Bellinzona

German sprinters showed good late season form at the famous ISTAF meeting in Berlin, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, held in the city&rsquo;s iconic Olympic Stadium on Sunday (3) afternoon with 30,000 spectators in attendance.&nbsp;
Jean-Paul Bredau became the first German in more than 20 years to break the 45 second-barrier in the 400m with victory in a lifetime best of 44.96 - also an Olympic qualifying time - to defeat Manuel Sanders who also improved to 45.05.
In the 400m hurdles, world finalist Joshua Abuaku improved his lifetime best from 48.32 to 48.13 for victory ahead of Estonia&rsquo;s Rasmus Magi (48.31) and teammate Emil Agyekum who also came away with a lifetime best of 48.47.
&ldquo;The fact that I can now run at the front here is a lifelong dream that has come true. I have goosebumps because it started here in 2009. I sat in the audience with my mother at the World Championships when Usain Bolt set the world record. I'll never forget that. I told her that I would like to run at the front there at some point,&rdquo; said Abuaku as quoted by Leichtathletik.de.

With the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships the next big outdoor event on the calendar, Joshua Hartmann demonstrated his medal-winning abilities by winning the 200m in 20.14 despite slowing in the late stages in celebration.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It feels very good to prove to everyone that I can do it. I received a lot of criticism after the World Cup, which was justified because I didn't do a good job there. That's why I'm even more pleased to have come back with two very good performances in Zurich and here,&rdquo; said Hartmann who broke the German record earlier this season with 20.02.
Elsewhere, European U23 silver medallist Henriette Jaeger won the 400m in a Norwegian record of 51.03 and Brit George Mills won the 1500m in 3:34.51 with a sub-54 second last lap.
From a non-European perspective, the highlights were Valarie Allman&rsquo;s world lead of 70.47m in the discus and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Letesenbet Gidey just missing the world 5000m record with 14:08.79.&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">World champions Mahuchikh and Vuleta win in Xiamen</h2>
Newly crowned world champions Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Ivana Vuleta highlighted the European interest in the inaugural Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday (2), the first significant athletics event to be held in China since the coronavirus pandemic.
Mahuchikh matched the world lead in the high jump with a first-time clearance at 2.02m, her 40th 2.00m-plus clearance of her career, while Vuleta won the long jump with 6.88m.

In the discus, European champion Sandra Perkovic rebounded from a fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Championships with a European lead of 67.32m to finish second in the discus behind home favourite Feng Bin who prised the victory from the Croatian in the sixth round with 67.41m.&nbsp;
<h2>Sweden edge out Finland in historic Finnkampen match</h2>
Both the men's and women's matches at the Finnkampen came down to the wire in Stockholm with the hosts winning both matches by the narrowest of margins.
Sweden and Finland were tied on 227 points in the men's match with the Swedes winning the title by virtue of more individual victories while Sweden eked out a narrow victory over Finland in the women's competition, 228.5 to 225.5 points.
Hosts Sweden were aided by victories from Olympic champions Armand Duplantis in the pole vault with 5.65m and Daniel Stahl with 66.44m in the discus. Maja Askag also produced victories in the long jump (6.55m) and triple jump (14.27m) and Sarah Lahti also doubled up successfully with victories and event records in the 5000m (15:14.09) and road 10km (32:32).
Finnish highlights included Lassi Etelatelo winning the javelin with 83.42m and Krista Tervo leading a one-two in the women's hammer from Silja Kosonen, 73.09m to 72.98m.&nbsp;

German sprinters deliver a string of victories at the ISTAF in Berlin

European indoor shot put champion Zane Weir produced a massive winning throw and a brilliant series to win at the Meeting Internazionale Citta di Padova, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, on Sunday (3) evening.
Weir started with 21.77m to lead the competition from multiple global medallist Joe Kovacs who opened with 21.51m. But in the second round Weir extended his lead with a massive lifetime best and meeting record of 22.44m, the longest throw recorded by a European shot putter in more than three decades.
Kovacs responded gamely with efforts of 22.40m and 22.39m in the second and fourth round respectively but just fell short and had to settle for second behind the inspired Italian who was keen to atone for his disappointing performance at the World Athletics Championships.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;I am truly honoured and grateful for this achievement,&rdquo; said Weir who went big in qualifying in Budapest with 21.82m before delivering an under par display later in the day with 19.99m for eleventh in the final.
&ldquo;In Budapest I learned that nothing can be taken for granted. It wasn't easy to digest the disappointment of the World Championships, but this performance makes me feel good. I hope to continue like this and I'm curious to see what the limits of my potential are,&rdquo; Weir added.

The balance of power in the men&rsquo;s shot put in Europe has shifted from Poland to Italy in recent years and the Italians will certainly be hoping for at least one - if not two - medals&nbsp; in this event at the European Athletics Championships in Rome from 7-12 June next year.
Behind Weir and Kovacs, surprise world silver medallist Leonardo Fabbri, who trains with Weir under the tutelage of Paolo Dal Soglio, finished third with 21.49m just a fortnight after improving his lifetime best to 22.34m to finish second to world record-holder Ryan Crouser at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
But in Padua, the plaudits belonged to Weir who recorded six valid throws, all of which were measured at 21.60m or further. He had three throws in excess of 22 metres with his best throw of 22.44m moving him up to fifth on the European all-time list.
Weir&rsquo;s winning mark of 22.44m was also the longest throw recorded by a European indoors or outdoors since 1989 when former East German Ulf Timmermann broke the world indoor record with 22.55m.
Other highlights included four-time European cross country champion Nadia Battocletti dropping down in distance to win the 1500m in a lifetime best of 4:03.34 ahead of Italian teammate Sintayehu Vissa (4:04.10) and Mohamed Abdikadar Sheik Ali leading an Italian one-two in the men's 1500m in a 3:33.79 PB ahead of British-based Osama Meslak in 3:33.92.&nbsp;

Weir blasts a lifetime best of 22.44m for victory in Padua

Switzerland&rsquo;s Ditaji Kambundji sped to a succession of records on her home track at the CITIUS Meeting in Bern, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, on Friday (4) evening.

The recently crowned European U23 100m hurdles champion initially equalled the European U23 record of 12.51 in the heats before taking full ownership of the record with a sparkling 12.47 clocking for victory in the final, also a European-leading time and a Swiss record.
"It was a magical day. I knew that I had fast times in my legs," said Kambundji, who was born in the Swiss capital. "But&nbsp;I did not expect such times as these, even if the sensations were very good during the warm-up. I am particularly satisfied to have been able to stay calm between these two races&rdquo;.
Since 2010, only one European has run faster over the distance, Belarus' Alina Talay running 12'.41 in 2018..&nbsp;

The European U23 record of 12.51 was previously held by Poland&rsquo;s Pia Skrzyszowska who was in a lane alongside her Swiss rival and while she had to relinquish her record, Skrzyszowska&rsquo;s third-place finish in a season&rsquo;s best of 12.59 marked a return to form for the Pole who is still on the comeback trail from a hamstring injury.&nbsp;
Two-time European indoor 60m hurdles champion Nadine Visser from the Netherlands and Ireland&rsquo;s Sarah Lavin were third and fourth respectively in 12.65 and 12.67, . Lavin is now just 0.02 shy of the Irish record held by former world indoor champion Derval O&rsquo;Rourke in 2010. Serbia&rsquo;s Elzan Bibic also won the 1500m in a national record of 3:34.20 ahead of Switzerland&rsquo;s Tom Elmer in 3:34.50.
Bibic took just over half-a-second off the previous 40-year-old mark of 3:34.85 set by Dragan Zdravkovic in 1983, in the summer after he won the European indoor title over the same distance.
British athletes also fared well in one of the final major one-day events before the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Imani Lansiquot won the 100m in 11.06 ahead of New Zealand&rsquo;s Zoe Hobbs (11.13) and European 200m champion Mujinga Kambundji (11.15) and Laviai Nielsen won the 400m in 50.83 to equal her lifetime best, finishing ahead of teammate and 400m hurdles specialist Jessie Knight in 51.75.

Kambundji blazes to a European U23 100m hurdles record of 12.47 in Berne

Only 18, Gyorgy Herczeg made use of the excellent wind conditions at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open Eisenstadt 2023, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, on Wednesday (26), to win the men's javelin with a European U20 record of 84.98m.
The massive throw beat the previous mark of 84.69m by Latvia&rsquo;s Zigismunds Sirmais which had stood since 2011. It was also a Hungarian record and the second furthest ever by an U20 athlete, bettered only by soon-to-be Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra's 86.48m from the 2016 World U20 Championships.
With the European Athletics U20 Championships in Jerusalem fast approaching, Herczeg has ownership of the four longest throws in Europe in his age-group and a cushion of more than seven metres over his closest rival on paper Max Dehning from Germany with 77.20m.&nbsp;

Another young Hungarian athlete, Boglarka Takacs &ndash; fresh from her double silver in the Espoo 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships &ndash; also won in windy conditions at the Leichtathletikarena, just edging it ahead of Germany&rsquo;s Rebekka Haase, with both athletes given the same time of 11.07 (+4.3m/s).
David Morgan-Harrison of Great Britain &amp; Northern Ireland won the men&rsquo;s 100m in 10.10 (+2.9m/s) and also clocked 10.05 (+4.3m/s) in the heats, with Austria&rsquo;s Markus Fuchs second in 10.14, while another Briton Elliot Jones ran a windy 10.09 (+3.8m/s) in the heats.
Meanwhile, former European U23 champion Petra Banhidi-Farkas leaped to 6.43m (+2.2m/s) in the women's long jump and in the pre-programme 19-year-old Austrian Enzo Diessl clocked 13.14 (+3.1m/s) in the U20 110m hurdles.

Herczeg hurls javelin to European U20 record of 84.98m in Eisenstadt

There could be another golden chapter in the career of Anita Wlodarczyk whose comeback from a broken leg gathered pace at the P-T-S Meeting in Banska Bystrica, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, on Thursday (20).
Approaching her 38th birthday, Wlodarczyk has struggled to break the 70 metre-line in her early season competitions but the Pole added more than three metres to her season&rsquo;s best yesterday evening with a winning throw of 74.81m.
Not only was this the best throw by a European in 2023, it also surpassed the qualifying standards for the 2023 World Athletics Championships and 2024 Olympic Games in Paris where Wlodarczyk will be in contention for her fourth successive gold medal.
&ldquo;After last year&rsquo;s health problems, I am happy to see that I am slowly improving. I am very joyful to be back. I really enjoyed it here in Bansk&aacute; Bystrica,&rdquo; said Wlodarczyk.&nbsp;
Fresh from defending his European U23 hammer title in Espoo last weekend, Ukraine&rsquo;s Mykhaylo Kokhan won the men&rsquo;s hammer with 78.62m ahead of his long-time Greek rival Christos Frantzeskakis with 74.98m.
<h2 dir="ltr">Folorunso&rsquo;s victory highlights European one-lap success&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>
Two-time European finalist Ayomide Folorunso came close to her Italian record in the 400m hurdles.
Folorunso was pushed to the line by Morocco&rsquo;s Noura Ennadi but carved out a narrow victory in 54.44 to win by 0.04 and come within one-tenth of her Italian record which she set at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene last summer.
&ldquo;I achieved a great time, but I value even more that I managed to fulfill everything I came here for. I wanted to deliver a performance without any mistakes, and I succeeded, except for minor details. Next week, I have the national championships, and this was a great preparation,&rdquo; said Folorunso.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Her teammate Rebecca Sartori was rewarded with a lifetime best of 55.07 in third.
Great Britain&rsquo;s Ama Pipi broke the 51 second-barrier for the first time in her career with victory in the 400m in 50.75 ahead of Lithuania&rsquo;s Modesta Morauskaite in 51.19 and France&rsquo;s Gilles Biron won the men&rsquo;s 400m in 45.49
<h2 dir="ltr">Two Slovakian records for Forster, two victories for Volko</h2>
It was also a good evening for emerging Slovakian sprint hurdler Viktoria Forster who set two national records on home soil.
Putting the disappointment of the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo where she clattered a hurdle and didn&rsquo;t progress out of the heats, Forster finished third in the 100m in a Slovakian record of 11.26 and second in the 100m hurdles in 12.82 to equal her national record.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s something unbelievable. The flat 100m was amazing. I felt good during the warm-up, and thanks to the atmosphere, I was excited and looking forward to the start.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The hurdles didn&rsquo;t go perfectly; I was still in euphoria from the 100m, and I had various thoughts before the race. After the last few days, I was afraid of how I would handle it. However, I proved to myself that I can do it, and I&rsquo;m really thrilled about that,&rdquo; said Forster.&nbsp;
And Slovakia&rsquo;s long-time standard bearer in the sprints Jan Volko delivered a sprint double. The 2019 European indoor 60m champion, who recently captained Slovakia at the European Athletics Team Championships 2nd Division, won the 100m in 10.21 and the 200m in 20.58.
Other European highlights included Slovenia&rsquo;s Anita Horvat defeating Ethiopia&rsquo;s pre-race favourite Hirut Meshesha in the 800m - 1:59.91 to 2:00.24 - and Poland&rsquo;s Cyprian Mrzyglod winning the javelin with 82.04m.&nbsp;

The rarefied air at the Resisprint meeting in La Chaux de Fonds, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger meeting, helped to yield fast times en masse in the sprints on Sunday (2).

There was also a historic performance in the men&rsquo;s 400m hurdles in which Nick Smidt from the Netherlands clocked a massive lifetime best of 48.36 to break the Dutch record of 48.44 which had stood to Harry Schulting since the 1979 World University Games which were held at high altitude in Mexico City.
"The main goal today was to chase the qualification for the Olympic Games. We succeeded. I had been chasing [Harry] Schulting's [national] record for some time. I knew I could go under. This was a very good race, but after tenth I was a bit off balance, so it can be even faster,&rdquo; said Smidt as quoted by NOS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Another national record fell in the women&rsquo;s 400m hurdles with Belgium&rsquo;s Hanne Claes revising the record books with 54.33 to eclipse the previous mark of 54.47 set by Paulien Couckuyt to win ahead of Norway&rsquo;s Line Kloster (54.57) and Finland&rsquo;s Viivi Lehikoinen (54.68).
Former European indoor champion Wilhem Belocian sped to a lifetime best and European leading time of 13.07 in the 110m hurdles to move to third on the French all-time list behind Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (12.95) and Ladji Doucoure (12.97) before winning the final in a slightly more modest time of 13.28.&nbsp;
European indoor silver medallist Lieke Klaver won the women&rsquo;s 400m in an outdoor season&rsquo;s best of 50.40 and Isayah Boers made it a Dutch double with victory in the men&rsquo;s 400m in 45.42.
Fresh from his victory at the European Athletics Team Championships last weekend, France&rsquo;s Ryan Zeze lowered his lifetime best in the 200m again to 20.20.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h2>Matusevicius wins again in Parnu</h2>
Lithuania&rsquo;s hero at the European Athletics Team Championships Edis Matusevicius was in winning form again at the Parnu Beach Stadium Meeting, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, on Sunday (2).
Matusevicius, whose victory in the javelin was crucial in sealing Lithuania&rsquo;s historic promotion into the top-flight of the European Athletics Team Championships, threw 81.80m in the first round which held off the challenge of Latvia&rsquo;s Patriks Gailums who improved to 81.74m in the fourth round.
Still on the comeback trail, 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Rohler from Germany was fifth with 78.08m.
In a largely Baltic affair in the women&rsquo;s javelin, Latvian Anete Kocina won a competitive event with 62.75m ahead of Estonia&rsquo;s Gedly Tugi (60.65m) and fellow Latvian Lina Muze (60.57m).&nbsp;
Other highlights included Azerbaijan&rsquo;s Hanna Skydan winning the hammer with 71.86m and decathlon specialist Hans Christian Hausenberg winning the long jump on home soil with 7.65m.

National records and European leads fall as La Chaux de Fonds delivers again

The first meeting to be streamed was the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTuhU73buKQ&amp;t=22458s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Night of the 10,000m PBs in London</a> on 20 May and European Athletics will be streaming no fewer than four events this weekend, including the Pfingstsportfest in Rehlingen with European and world champions Julian Weber, Malaika Mihambo and Hanna Klein among the big names confirmed.&nbsp;
Additionally, European Athletics will be streaming the Nordic Championships in Copenhagen on 27-28 May live through the European Athletics YouTube channel.

<h2>Who is confirmed?</h2>
The javelin competitions will take centre stage at the Pfingstsportfest in Rehlingen (WACT Silver) on 28 May.
European champion Julian Weber takes on teammate Andreas Hofmann and Belgian breakthrough star Timothy Herman in the men&rsquo;s javelin while 2018 European champion Christin Hussong goes head-to-head with Poland&rsquo;s Olympic silver medallist Maria Andrejczyk in the women&rsquo;s javelin.
European indoor 3000m champion Hanna Klein will contest the 1500m and 2018 European champion Mateusz Przybylko headlines the men&rsquo;s high jump. World and Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo has also been confirmed for the 100m.
The first big French names to be confirmed for the Meeting de Montreuil (WACT Silver) on the outskirts of Paris on 31 May are former European 100m record-holder Jimmy Vicaut in the 100m, veteran Melina Robert-Michon in the discus and Pascal Martinot-Lagarde and Wilhem Belocian in the 110m hurdles.
Top international stars who have been confirmed include Olympic 100m hurdles champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn who goes head-to-head with former world champion Nia Ali.&nbsp;
At the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Chorzow on 4 June, European champion Pia Skrzyszowska is due to cross paths with Olympic champion Camacho-Quinn in the 100m hurdles. Another highlight is the 400m featuring home favourite and mixed Olympic 4x400m champion Natalia Kaczmarek against world and Olympic silver medallist Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic.&nbsp;
Other leading Polish athletes to be confirmed include Wojciech Nowicki and Pawel Fajdek in the hammer, Ewa Swoboda in the 100m and Piotr Lisek in the pole vault.
European indoor long jump champion Jazmin Sawyers will jump at the Nikaia in Nice on 17 June.&nbsp;
From an international standpoint, world 5000m champion Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia will contest the 10,000m.
