<h2>European Athletics U23 Championships</h2>
The European Athletics U23 Championships was introduced in 1997, ostensibly to facilitate the transition between the U20 and senior ranks.
The first edition of the championships were held in Turku and the event will be returning to Finnish soil later this year when Espoo, situated just outside Helsinki, stages the four-day championships from 13-16 July.
One athlete who already has her sights set on the championships is Great Britain's reigning European indoor and outdoor 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson. However, the 21-year-old is planning to contest the 400m to improve her speed ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
And this could also be a highly successful championships for hosts Finland with Silja Kosonen and Saga Vanninen graduating into the U23 ranks. Both athletes won gold medals at the European Athletics U20 Championships and World Athletics U20 Championships in the hammer and heptathlon respectively in 2021.
Also watch out for European U20 3000m champion Ilona Mononen from Finland in the middle distance events in Espoo.
Highlights at the last edition of the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn included Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia defending his title in the discus with a championship record of 67.45m and Yaroslava Mahuchikh winning gold in the high jump with a 2.00m clearance, also a championship record. Still only 21, Mahuchikh is eligible to defend her title in Espoo if she chooses to do so.
As well as six championship records, one European U23 record also fell in Tallinn as Germany's men's 4x100m team raced to victory in 38.70 to revise the record books.

<h2>European Athletics Indoor Championships</h2>
The European Athletics Indoor Championships are the biggest indoor event organised by European Athletics.
The last edition in Istanbul, T&uuml;rkiye was highlighted by Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam winning her third European indoor pentathlon title with a world record of 5055 points ahead of Adrianna Sulek from Poland who matched the previous world record with 5013 points to win silver. This was the first world record to be set at the European Athletics Indoor Championships since 2011.
From a domestic standout, Tugba Danismaz delighted the crowd in the Atakoy Arena with victory in the women's triple jump. Danismaz reached out to a national record of 14.31m to win T&uuml;rkiye's first ever gold medal in a field event at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.
Femke Bol from the Netherlands defended her gold medals in both the 400m and 4x400m while Jakob Ingebrigtsen also won the 1500/3000m double for the second successive championships to bring his tally of European indoor titles up to five and his overall European senior title haul to 11 at the age of 22.&nbsp;
With four gold medals, Norway topped the medal table for the first time in European Athletics Indoor Championships history. Aside from Ingebrigtsen's double, Karsten Warholm regained his title in the 400m while Sondre Guttormsen won the pole vault title on countback. Sander Skotheim also won heptathlon silver behind France's Kevin Mayer who won a record-equalling third gold medal in the event.
In total, 21 nations won medals in the Atakoy Arena while 33 countries had at least one athlete place inside the top eight in a final. Four world leading marks were set across the four days of competition along with 12 European leads and 39 national records.&nbsp;
The next edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands from 6-9 March.

<h2>European Athletics Championships&nbsp;</h2>
As the jewel in the crown of events organised by European Athletics, the biennial European Athletics Championships are the showcase of the very best that the continental branch of the sport has to offer.
At the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships from 15-21 August, part of the wider multisport European Championships from 11-21 August, no fewer than 11 championship records were set across the seven days of competition in the city's hallowed Olympic Stadium, the venue for the1972 Olympic Games.&nbsp;
Highlights included Armand Duplantis defending his pole vault title and improving his championship record to 6.06m, Femke Bol winning a historic treble in the 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, Jakob Ingebrigtsen defending his 1500m and 5000m titles and 19-year-old Mykolas Alekna from Lithuania winning the discus with a championship record of 69.78m.
Hosts Germany topped the medal table with seven gold medals ahead of Great Britain &amp; NI with six. Germany had an especially memorable hour on the second evening session with Niklas Kaul and Gina Luckenkemper winning gold medals in the decathlon and 100m respectively.&nbsp;
The 2024 European Athletics Championships will take place in Rome from 7-12 June some 50 years after the Italian capital last staged the championships.

<h2>The next edition of the European Athletics Team Championships will be part the European Games 2023</h2>
The European Athletics Team Championships will now consist of three divisions, whereas formerly it was four leagues.
The Championships take place on consecutive days between 20-25 June 2023&nbsp;at the Slaski Stadium in the Region of Silesia, which was also the venue for the 2021 European Athletics Team Championships Super League.
The 1st Division will consist of 16 teams, the 2nd Division will also have 16 teams, and the 3rd Division will be made up of the remaining teams entered from European Athletics&rsquo; Member Federations.
In order to enhance the TV and spectator engagement in the Championships and maximise the promotional opportunities across the entire continent and beyond,&nbsp;all the divisions&nbsp;will be take place during the European Games 2023 and over six days at the same venue.

<h2>European Athletics U20 Championships</h2>
This biennial championships was first held in 1970 after three editions of the unofficial European Junior Games which started in 1964 and this year's event travels to Israel for the first time between 7-10 August 2023.
And the location will be familiar to many competitors as the Givat Ram Stadium in Jerusalem staged the 2022 European Athletics U18 Championships. Undoubtedly many of the champions will be planning to return later this year to seek honours at U20 level.
At the 2021 European Athletics U20 Championships in Tallinn, Great Britain &amp; NI topped the medal table for the second successive edition with six gold medals ahead of Germany and Ireland who both claimed four titles apiece.
Individual highlights at those championships included Lithuania's Mykolas Alekna winning the discus title only one year before graduating to senior honours at the European Athletics Championships and France's Sasha Zhoya winning the 110m hurdles, clocking a wind-assisted 12.98 in the semifinals before setting a championship record of 13.05 in the final.
Prospective stars at this year's European Athletics U20 Championships include the highly-rated Serbian duo of Angelina Topic and Adriana Vilagos who won medals at the European Athletics Championships in the high jump and javelin respectively in Munich last summer.
Topic also won gold at the European Athletics U18 Championships in Jerusalem before clinching high jump bronze in Munich at the age of 17 to become the event's youngest ever medallist while Vilagos followed up her world U20 title in Cali, Colombia with silver in the javelin behind her long-time age-group rival Elina Tzengko from Greece.
Also watch out for Italy's Mattia Furlani and Niels Laros from the Netherlands who secured impressive doubles in Jerusalem last year. Furlani swept the long jump and high jump titles while Laros eased to victories in the 1500m and 3000m before revising the European U18 bests in both events at the end of the season.&nbsp;

<h2>ECCC Cross Country</h2>
The ECCC Cross Country is one of the longest standing and most established cross country fixtures on the calendar, even predating the SPAR European Cross Country Championships by more than three decades.
The first edition of the ECCC Cross Country was held in Arlon, Belgium in 1962 - the venue for the first 13 editions of the championships. But the first event looked and felt very different to the last iteration of the ECCC Cross Country which was held in Oeiras, Portugal.
It was only in 1982 when a women&rsquo;s event was added to the ECCC Cross Country for the first time and the men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s competitions were held in different venues until 2005 when the championships became a combined event. Men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s U20 races were added to the programme in 2006 with a mixed relay the latest addition to the timetable in 2021.&nbsp;
Notable past individual winners have included many of the greats of European distance running such as Karel Lismont (1972, 1974, 1979), Carlos Lopes (1977, 1982, 1985), Francesco Panetta (1987-88) and Paulo Guerra (1995-97, 1999) and Sergey Lebid (2001) on the men&rsquo;s side and Albertina Dias (1994-96), Carla Sacramento (1998, 2002) and Fernanda Ribeiro (2005) on the women&rsquo;s side.
The most successful clubs in the senior events are Sporting Clube de Portugal who have won 15 titles in the men&rsquo;s race - including six in a row between 1981-1986 and again between 1989-1994 - and Sporting Braga on the women&rsquo;s side who won seven successive titles between 1987-1993.
At the 2023 ECCC Cross Country which was held in Oropesa del Mar near Castellon on 5 February, local club Playas de Castellon dominated proceedings by winning two individual and three team titles. Burundi's Rodrigue Kwizera, who lives and trains in Spain, won the individual title in the senior men's race and led Playas de Castellon to the team title while last year's individual winner Likina Amebew, who finished sixth this year, led the host club to honours in the senior women's race.
Mariam Benkert opened the account for Playas de Castellon with victory in the U20 women's race while the day fittingly concluded with yet another victory for the hosts with Uganda's middle distance star Winnie Nanyonda anchoring her club to their second successive victory in the mixed relay.

<h2>European Athletics U18 Championships</h2>
This is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for European athletes under the age of 18 in the year of competition.
It was created to promote higher-level competition among the more talented members of this age group in Europe and provide a stepping stone to the U20 age group.
The third edition of the championships in Jerusalem, Israel were highlighted by 15-year-old Topi Parviainen from Finland setting a European U18 best of 84.52m in the javelin, Mattia Furlani winning gold medals in both the long jump and high jump and Serbia's Angelina Topic clearing 1.92m in the high jump.
Once again, Great Britain topped the medal table in Jerusalem with eight gold medals, all of which came in women's events. Standout highlights included Mia McIntosh winning the 100m hurdles in a championship record of 13.05 and Faith Akinbileje winning gold in the 200m and helping the Brits to the medley relay title.
The fourth edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships will be held in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia from 18-21 July 2024.

<h2>Who is confirmed?</h2>
An array of gold medallists from the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships have already been announced.
European 110m hurdles champion Asier Martinez from Spain will open his season in the 60m hurdles at the CMCM Indoor Meeting in Luxembourg while former European champion Michal Haratyk from Poland goes head-to-head with local star Bob Bertemes in the shot put.
The women&rsquo;s shot put will be the centre of attention at the Hvězdy v Nehvizdech nine days later with European champion Jessica Schilder from the Netherlands taking on a field which includes Canada&rsquo;s Sarah Mitton, who currently leads the world indoor list with 19.80m, along with multiple major championship medallists Fanny Roos from Sweden and Hungary&rsquo;s former world and European indoor champion Anita Marton.
Treble European champion Femke Bol from the Netherlands is confirmed for the Metz Moselle Athlelor on 11 February where she will take on her training partner and European bronze medallist Anna Kielbasinska in the 400m. Lieke Klaver, who was also part of the Dutch gold medal-winning team in the 4x400m in Munich last summer alongside Bol, is confirmed for the 200m.
Meanwhile, reigning European champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh from Ukraine will seek her third victory at the Banskobystrick&aacute; Latka on 14 February. The Ukrainian cleared her lifetime best and meeting record of 2.06m at this Slovak event in 2021, a mark which ranks joint third on the world indoor all-time list.
Mahuchikh, who also jumps in Cottbus on 25 January, will face a typically stellar field in Banska Bystrica which also includes world outdoor champion Eleanor Patterson from Australia.
Former world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith, who has already lowered the British indoor 60m record to 7.04 this winter, is one of the big names announced for Belgrade the following day.

<h2>European Throwing Cup</h2>
The event which took place for the first time in 2001 under its initial alias of the European Throwing Winter Challenge traditionally marks the beginning of the outdoor season for European throwers.&nbsp;
At the most recent edition of the European Throwing Cup in Leiria, Portugal on 11-12 March, three world leading marks were set across the two days of competition. World champion Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia won back-to-back European Throwing Cup titles in the discus with 68.20m while Germany's Shanice Craft followed suit with 64.88m in the women's discus.&nbsp;
Italy's Sara Fantini also reached out to a world leading mark of 73.26m in the women's hammer.
Ukraine topped the medal table with four gold medals which included an emotional victory for Roman Kokoshko. Now based in Portugal, Kokoshko won the shot put with 21.52m to defeat a field which included last year's winner and recently crowned European indoor champion Zane Weir from Italy.
From the 40 participating nations, an impressive 24 countries left Leiria with medalware for posterity. And the breadth and spread of talent across Europe was demonstrated by athletes from Kosovo, Iceland and Luxembourg all winning medals across the weekend.&nbsp;
Serena Vincent also became the first British woman to win a title at the European Throwing Cup with gold in the U23 shot put while Nicola Tuthill became the first Irish athlete - male or female - to win a medal in the competition with silver in the U23 hammer.
The 2024 edition of the European Throwing Cup will also be held in Leiria on 9-10 March.
