Onboarding is a European Athletics programme designed to help incoming senior leaders of Member Federations - such as a President, General Secretary or CEO - to get acquainted with the structures and activities of European Athletics. The aim is to proactively provide a Member Federation's senior leaders with support from European Athletics as soon they are elected or appointed so that a relationship between the two parties can develop quickly and constructively.

In 2019, European Athletics, and a network of nine partners created the Agency for the Development of Athletics in Europe (ADAE) to facilitate project proposals for European Union funding and lead projects on behalf of European Athletics - which is located outside the European Union in Switzerland - and its Member Federations.
The Agency for the Development of Athletics is an international non-governmental organisation and non-profit association in charge of&nbsp;:
<ul>
<li>Assisting the European Athletics Federations in promoting and developing athletics in all forms throughout Europe.</li>
<li>Promoting voluntary activities in sport, as well as social inclusion, equality of opportunity and awareness of the importance of physical activity for health.</li>
<li>Promoting fair-play and other ethical values in sport and fight against cross-border threats, such as doping and violence, as well as all kinds of intolerance and discrimination.</li>
<li>Assisting European Athletics and its member federations in their relations and projects with the European institutions such as the Council of Europe, the European Union and de European Commission.</li>
</ul>
European funding opportunities often appear out of reach for sports clubs or federations. The processes to obtain financial aid can also seem too complex.
However, the sport has many advantages that tie in with the objectives of European policies. These objectives involve various programmes (like Erasmus+), which are not widely taken advantage of by sporting organisations, despite the significant financial resources they offer.
The role of the ADAE is therefore to link these funding opportunities to European athletic development projects. I Run Clean / Erasmus+ project In 2019, European Athletics, and a network of ten partners led by the Agency for the Development of Athletics in Europe (ADAE), secured a grant of &euro;324,000 from the European Union programme Erasmus+ to expand the <a href="https://www.irunclean.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Athletics' I Run Clean anti-doping education programme</a> to the grassroots of athletics throughout Europe.
The funding from the EU&rsquo;s Erasmus+ programme has helped support the creation of young ambassador-led workshops to be delivered in schools and sports clubs as well as new interactive units for the I Run Clean e-learning platform. The project was started in January 2020 and is running through to February 2023.
Joining European Athletics in the project were the national athletics federations of Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, La Sorbonne Nouvelle, the Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, and University of Milan School of Exercise and Sport Science.
I Run Clean provides reliable information that helps users understand the issues around doping in sport and the regulations that must be observed to compete fairly. Completing the current e-learning programme, which is available in 25 languages, is a mandatory entry requirement for all athletes taking part in European Championships competitions.
Erasmus+ is the EU's funding programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. In 2019, more than 700 sport-related applications were received by the agency managing the programme and I Run Clean was among the 104 major projects allocated to collaborative partnerships across a range of topics. Grants were also made for smaller collaborative partnerships and non-profit sport events.

RFEA Jungle Athletics project
The European Commission has awarded the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) &euro;300,000 to develop European Athletics&rsquo; Dynamic New Athletics for use in schools and clubs.
RFEA&rsquo;s Jungle Athletics project, which will combine the <a href="https://dna.run/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dynamic New Athletics (DNA)</a> mixed-gender team competition format with digital technology, was one of just five proposals selected for funding from 141 submitted in response to the Commission&rsquo;s 'Grassroots sport programmes and infrastructure innovation' call for proposals published in May 2020.
The proposal was prepared with assistance from European Athletics staff and the Agency for the Development of Athletics in Europe (ADAE), which is responsible for European Union related matters on behalf of European Athletics.
Jungle Athletics is the logical next step for the DNA concept, which was originally developed by European Athletics for use in elite competition at the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus.
The European Commission&rsquo;s call for proposals aimed to give to traditional sport organisations like federations and clubs the opportunity to develop and promote new forms of practicing sport and physical activity. Applicants were encouraged to present projects that dared to 'change the rules of the game' to attract a new generation of athletes.
According to the submitted project proposal, the aim of the two-year Jungle Athletics project is to engage a high number of young participants by implementing the new formats together with a smartphone app that supports their operation and provides educational content including European Athletics&rsquo; I Run Clean anti-doping programme.
Targets for the project include more than 100,000 participants in Spain and close to a million views of the programme&rsquo;s videos through the app and social media platforms.
Expected results include:

<li>Increased awareness of athletics and its offers.</li>
<li>Increased initial engagement among school-age children.</li>
<li>Increased retention of those not necessarily on the high-performance pathway of traditional athletics.</li>
<li>Increased understanding of how standard and non-standard equipment can be used in different settings, thus broadening the concept of athletics and its practice.</li>
<li>Increased membership in traditional athletics clubs.</li>
</ul>

RFEA Jungle Athletics project

Across Europe athletes are making a pledge: I Run Clean.
It is a clear and powerful pledge that they respect themselves, their health and their competitors by following the rules of athletics.
To give more substance to the pledge, European Athletics launched the I Run Clean anti-doping e-learning platform in 2018. It is an additional resource and support for the anti-doping education programmes offered by Member Federations, national anti-doping agencies and other organisations.
The easy-to-use interactive I Run Clean programme comprises of eight units, starting with Values and Decision Making, and a curated knowledge base, which together provides everyone with an understanding of the rules, procedures and other information they need in order to be responsible for their own actions in the fight against doping.
All athletes are invited to stand up for their sport and make the I Run Clean pledge by completing the programme and earning their diploma.
The I Run Clean diploma is also a mandatory qualification for all athletes competing at European Athletics&rsquo; events.

Member Federation Networking and Education Programme

As part of the Member Federation Networking and Education Programme, the CEO Conference is planned to be held in Vouliagmeni, Greece on 13-14 March 2024. 
European Athletics organises this event usually every two years and invites the CEOs, Directors or General Secretaries of our 51 Member Federations to attend and participate. This edition is organised back-to-back so the occurrence is the same as it was before Covid hit.
Our objective is to provide learning opportunities and a networking environment to strengthen our community. The main topics to be discussed are European Athletics Roadmap 2024-2027, Monetizing digital data and content, European Running Championships 2025 National Teams, Human Rights, Safeguarding and Growing the Athletics Community.
The last edition was held in Belchin, Bulgaria from 23-24 May 2023.&nbsp;The main topics discussed then were the Future of Athletics, European Athletics Strategy, Leadership in Crisis Time, Running, Governance, Safeguarding, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

In April 2017, the European Athletics Council agreed to implement the Focus Federation Programme as means of enhancing the transparency, improving communication and increasing understanding between European Athletics and its Member Federations.
Each year, two federations will be invited to participate by exchanging information with the European Athletics Head Office staff and making a presentation to the European Athletics Council. The programme is offered to all federations that are not currently represented on the Council.
As part of the Programme, participating Member Federations are invited to the European Athletics Head Office in Lausanne and briefed on all areas of European Athletics&rsquo; operations, ranging from competition structure, bidding processes, good governance, marketing strategy and initiatives such as I Run Clean and Dynamic New Athletics (DNA).
This gives both the Member Federation and European Athletics the opportunity to interact and ask questions of each other.

It also gives European Athletics the chance to understand the Member Federation&rsquo;s organisational structure and operations, including their development plans, as well as understand their struggles and challenges.
This process reinforces the bond between European Athletics and the relevant Member Federation.
An action plan is then established for enhancing the functions, efficiency and engagement of the Member Federation which is later presented to the European Athletics Council.
As of September 2023, nine Member Federations to have completed the Focus Federation Programme: Belarus, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine.&nbsp;
The Netherlands became the tenth Member Federation to present their required presentation to the European Athletics Council on 19 October 2023.&nbsp;

One of the purpose of European Athletics is to serve all our Member Federations and each of our activities must be measured against this test.
We are fortunate that the commercial success of our competition programme has made it possible to provide our Member Federations with various forms of support in return, which has been constantly developed and enhanced over more than a quarter of a century.
The Member Federation Support Programme represents the latest incarnation of how we provide that support. It reflects the knowledge we have gained and the lessons we have learned in a period covering more than two decades.
One of European Athletics&rsquo; priorities is to make sure the support we offer is customised to the specific needs of the federations themselves. Each federation is unique and faces its own specific set of circumstances and challenges. A one-size-fits-all programme is now outmoded and no longer the most effective way to support federations as they work towards our collective strategic aim of developing athletics and making it &lsquo;Your Sport for Life&rsquo; for every European.
The Member Federation Support Programme is designed with the intent that every federation can benefit and clearly see how it benefits from what is on offer. The regulations emphasise a project-oriented approach, flexibility, and the sharing of ideas as well as accountability.
This Member Federation Support Programme 2024-25, approved by the European Athletics Council, will see CHF 795,000 distributed during 2024 and again in 2025.
The grants are distributed among the 51 Member Federations with amounts allocated ranging from CHF 500 to CHF 24,500 for the two-year period. The proposals for grants broadly fall into three areas:

The grant is CHF 10,000 per &lsquo;Developing Member Federation&rsquo; project for each of the two years of the current programme.

This grant is open to all Member Federations for a subvention of up to CHF 12,000 per year. Project areas included youth activities, club systems, running, volunteering, integrity, athlete development, commercial strengthening, and digitalisation.

European Athletics usually provides funds that allow the participation of Member Federation delegates to participate in educational activities or competitions. The basic grant of CHF 500 is provided to all Member Federations to cover their annual membership fee according to the European Athletics Constitution (Article 39).

This programme started in 2020 with Slovenia as part of the pilot project. It provides an opportunity for our Member Federations to produce their very own National Development Plan (a printed document that is made in English and then translated in their local language) based on their own strategy. The Member Federations involved are engaged in conversations with their stakeholders, and subsequently follow a methodology and action plan driven and financed by European Athletics to help them have a clear focus in identifying their main strategic priorities for the coming years. It is a mutual commitment from the Member Federations and European Athletics. European Athletics is committed to the principle of safeguarding in our sport and has developed a new safeguarding and abuse prevention programme, its Safeguarding Programme.
This is to ensure the protection and safety of everyone involved in athletics, whether they are athletes, officials, leaders, staff, volunteers, partners or contractors.
This programme is designed to safeguard people regardless of a person's background, age, ethnicity, origin, gender, or sexual orientation.
&ldquo;Safeguarding is instrumental to our sport, Athletics is a place where we should be able to express our passion and feel safe regardless of our role,&rdquo; commented European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov.
As an Area Association, European Athletics is following the lead of the global governing body World Athletics and acting as a role model and facilitator for its Member Federations to implement their own programme withing the guidelines of its <a href="https://european-athletics.directus.app/assets/7dc6cda4-da3c-41f2-93a2-0172ce6d826a/Safeguarding%20Policy.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Safeguarding Policy (which can be downloaded here)</a> which was launched in June 2022.
The European Athletics Safeguarding Programme is based on two pillars.
Firstly, European Athletics aims to ensure World Athletics&nbsp;<a href="https://worldathletics.org/news/press-releases/world-athletics-safeguarding-policy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy and guidelines</a> are being enforced within Europe and provide easy access to the European Athletics reporting platform (known as the <a href="https://european-athletics.integrityplatform.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Athletics Integrity Platform</a>) ensure a proper and speedy response when cases are being reported.
Secondly, European Athletics will focus on awareness raising, education and support to its own members of Council, committees, working groups and staff as well as to its Member Federation Leaders.
European Athletics support for its Member Federations includes raising awareness of safeguarding issues by providing prevention and educational activities via its communication campaigns and also establishing forums during various events including the European Athletics Convention, the Young Leaders Forum, and the CEO Conference.&nbsp;
Member Federations are being strongly encouraged to create or reviewing their own national safeguarding policies with a view to implementing the measures outlined by European Athletics in its Safeguarding Polices by the end of 2023.
Everyone in the European Athletics family is responsible for ensuring that no one suffers abuse, harassment, or exploitation.&nbsp;

Safeguarding Programme: Preventing Harassment, Abuse and Exploitation

The role of the medical sector in athletics is crucial, with European Athletics&nbsp; making its own vital contribution to the area of medicine and sports science, especially in the realm of education.
From anti-doping to injury data, European Athletics is keeping constantly abreast of athletics&rsquo; medical situation in the sport's ever-changing world.
Studies and surveys commissioned by European Athletics provide invaluable data about injury patterns and risks, helping to increase the safety of athletes competing at European Athletics events. Beside the regular research projects and surveys conducted on the side lines of the major championships, the two main areas that come under the Medical and Anti-Doping Education Programme are:

Medical and Anti-Doping Education Programme

The European Athletics Medical Seminar is a biennial event organised in conjunction with the European Athletics Championships, with the goal of exchanging best practices and ideas for the benefit of the athletes and the sport.
Experts from the sports medicine community present on their specialist areas to representatives of the Member Federations; the agenda for the seminar normally covers presentations about standard medical and physiotherapy treatments, questions related to nutrition and the fight against doping.
As a response to the travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, in 2020 and 2021 European Athletics organised a series of free Medical Webinars which were aimed specifically at medical experts, physiotherapists, sport scientists and medical staff of Member Federations (the 2020 Medical Webinar Series replaced that year's planned Medical Seminar at the European Athletrics Championships due to the latter being cancelled owing to the pandemic)..

Sustainability Programme

In 2022, European Athletics has created a roadmap for sustainability to be implemented inside of the organization as well as inside its events. This roadmap involves multiple stakeholders including World Athletics, commercial partners, Member Federations and Local Organising Committees.
The goal of the <a href="https://european-athletics.directus.app/assets/21e42b06-221b-4b9e-881b-9cd55310eee9/Sustainability%20Roadmap%202022-2023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sustainability Roadmap</a> (which can be downloaded here) is to provide milestones with a timeline so that we have a direction to take and we can measure the progress in getting there.
This roadmap concerns various stakeholders of European Athletics and addresses the broad area of interest that sustainability represents, including environment, economy and society.

Sustainability Roadmap

More and more organizations are moving in the same direction with regards to sustainability issues and we have the opportunity to benefit from these synergies.&nbsp;
This is the reason European Athletics decided to be a partner in the creation of the <a href="https://www.european-athletics.com/news/european-athletics-adds-its-voice-to-green-sports-hub-europe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Green Sports Hub Europe</a>, a project funded by the European Union support programme Erasmus+.
This project will last 36 months from January 2021 until December 2023. It is lead by the organisation Surfrider Europe and involves ten partners from various sports like athletics, basketball football and volleyball.
The purpose of the Green Sports Hube Europe is to create an European Union-level hub on sports and environment that will help the sport sector identify its needs and potential actions for a greener and more sustainable future.
The projects aims to deliver of three sets of outcomes.
1) A Europe-wide report about the brakes and levers of sustainability in sport as well as become an activator of a more eco-sustainable sports sector.
2) The creation and testing of a self-assessment tool for change with sport organisations and events.
The self-assessment tool will then be provided to the European Athletics Member Federations so that they can benefit from it in order to implement local sustainability programmes.
3) The development and delivery a communication campaign targeting the sport sector in Europe to increase its commitment to the <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals</a>, especially Goals 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 as well as the <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/priorities-2019-2024/european-green-deal_en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Green Deal</a>.

The success and development of athletics in Europe depends on the incalculable contributions of time, effort and expertise made by individuals working at all levels of the sport.
European Athletics regularly recognises those who have given the most through a system of awards, which according to its Constitution are awarded by decision of the Council. The following three categories of awards are given by European Athletics.

Awards Programme

This award is given annually to individuals who have successfully dedicated a number of years of service to their national federation and/or European Athletics, excluding the current European Athletics Council Members.&nbsp;
One representative of all the winners is presented with their award at the annual Golden Tracks awards ceremony during the European Athletics Convention. The remainder of the awards are presented at national ceremonies.

Member Federation Award

The European Athletics Coaching Award recognises and celebrates the important contributions made by coaches to the sport of athletics. The awards are the centrepiece of European Athletics' strategy to promote coaching at all levels of the sport.
The coach of each European individual champion in the senior category is automatically nominated for the award. In addition, all European Athletics Member Federations in good standing are invited to nominate one additional male coach and one additional female coach per year based on the criteria 'excellence in coaching'.
One representative of all the winners is presented with their award at the annual Golden Tracks awards ceremony during the European Athletics Convention.&nbsp;
The remainder of the awards are presented at national ceremonies.

This programme is intended to provide guidance, mentoring and skills to leaders at all levels of athletics organisations across Europe.
Events such as online presentations, workshops and in-person seminars are offered to aspiring and current young leaders, women' leaders and the staff of European Athletics Member Federations.&nbsp;
With both interactive elements and networking opportunities along with high-quality content, the skills and efficiency of participants in the various elements of the Leadership Programme, their respective national federations and the organisations are strengthened.

Leadership Programme

The Mentoring Project was created in 2021 with a pilot-version which has been very successful.
The project is designed to enlarge the participants' networks, exchange ideas and best-practices as well as knowledge.
The Mentors are well-established athletics leaders and their Mentees are potential future leaders with their Member Federation or within athletics in general.
Mentor-Mentee-Pairs are encouraged to have regular meetings (at least once a month). Moreover, there are meetings with the whole group of participants of the Mentoring Project to discuss overall topics such as leadership and leadership styles. All Mentees work on a certain project, where their Mentors shares advise and his experience in the field.&nbsp;
A new edition will start in March 2025.&nbsp;

Mentoring Project

The Online Leadership Course is a 16 hours science-based workshop designed to help leaders in all areas of athletics. The course focuses on balancing effective structures with equal opportunities. It aims to boost productivity in sports organisations, tackle existing inequalities, and appreciate the unique qualities of each leader, creating a fairer environment for everyone.

This leadership course is intended for both experienced and new leaders in athletics. The course is especially suited for individuals who are eager to learn, share experiences, exchange ideas, and are open to reflecting on their own behaviour.

Online Leadership Course

The European Athletics Young Leaders Forum was first held in 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Since 2010, it is taking place biannually during the European Athletics Championships. The next edition will be held during the European Athletics Championships in Roma 2024 with a new name, the European Athletics Future Leaders Forum.&nbsp;
The Forum brings together highly motivated young adults, who are involved in sports and looking to evolve it further. The participants share their experience, build friendships, and learn from the best &ndash; World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and Ndaba Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, are among the personalities to have spoken at the Forum.
Organised by former Future Leaders themselves, the Forum promises to maximise sharing and emphasise collaboration. Daily team challenges and manifold, exciting topics keep things lively and fun. The Future Leaders&rsquo; mission is to promote volunteer work and grassroots projects in athletics to help members develop themselves and make valuable contributions to sport and their local communities.

High Performance Conference

Each year, European Athletics put together an intensive schedule of events for its annual Coaching Summit Series, which has provided high level instructional and networking opportunities since it was inaugurated in 2008 and seen thousands of coaches attend the various events.
The Coaching Summit Series usually take place from September to December and are spread across Europe, addressing a variety of different events and disciplines.

European Athletics Member Federations are eligible for the Coaching Summit Series Scholarship grants as follows:

<li>CHF 400 if one coach takes part in a Coaching Summit Series event in-person&nbsp;or the registration fees for up to CHF 400 for the participation of one or more coaches in an online event. </li>
<li>CHF 800 if two coaches take part in one of the Coaching Summit Series event in-person (can be two different events)&nbsp;or the registration fees for up to CHF 800 for the participation of two or more coaches in an online event. </li>
<li>CHF 1200 if three coaches take part in one of the Coaching Summit Series event in-person (can be three different events) and at least one coach is a woman, or the registration fees for up to CHF 1200 for the participation of three or more coaches to an online event if at least one coach is of a different gender.</li>

Coaching Summit Series

European Athletics organises a Coach Networking Project with the aim to increase networking opportunities among elite coaches and to improve cooperation among European Member Federations competing against the rest of the world.
In the first edition participate 35 coaches from 18 different member federations. They are divided into 9 working groups depending on the discipline and the coaching level. In this edition, the 3 disciplines are discus, triple jump and sprints. The groups meet once a month online to talk about different topics in their specific discipline and share their experiences.&nbsp; Every working group has an experienced Lead Coach who guides the group meetings to ensure content and interaction between the participants.
The call for new coaches who want to join the next edition will be launched at the beginning of 2024.&nbsp;

Apeldoorn is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands and among the largest municipalities in Gelderland. It is a mid-size city with a population of approximately 161,000. Apeldoorn has a charming and lively inner city and a young, sports-minded population.
