<h2 dir="ltr">European Athletics Team Championships</h2>
The Slovenian city of Maribor has been confirmed as the host venue for the 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 2nd Division and 3rd Division.
Both divisions will be held at the recently renovated Athletic Stadium Poljane Maribor which also hosted the athletics programme for the 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival as well as the 2024 Balkan U18 Championships.
The 3rd Division takes place on 24-25 June with the 2nd Division, which features hosts Slovenia, taking place on 28-29 June.

Slovenia just missed out on promotion to the 1st Division at the 2023 European Athletics Team Championships in Silesia, finishing fourth and an agonising 0.5 points behind Lithuania who sealed the third and final promotion spot into the highest echelon of the biennial championships after a thrilling and tense final day.
However, a full-strength Slovenian team including reigning European discus champion Kristjan Ceh - who won maximum points at the 2023 European Athletics Team Championships with a championship record of 69.94m - will be hopeful of securing a top three finish and promotion into the 1st Division for the first time in championship history.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Other highlights from a Slovenian standpoint in 2023 included victories for Tina Sutej and Marusa Mismas-Zrimsek in the pole vault and 3000m steeplechase respectively and Anita Horvat anchoring Slovenia to maximum points in the mixed 4x400m relay.&nbsp;
The European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division takes place on 27-29 June in Madrid, Spain where Italy will be looking to retain their overall title after winning for the first time in championship history in 2023.

<h2>European Running Championships</h2>
European Athletics is delighted to announce that the first ever edition of the European Running Championships will take place in Leuven and Brussels on 12-13 April 2025, with the masses joining the elites for a festival of running on the streets of Belgium.
The inaugural edition will see road races take centre stage at a standalone European Championships, featuring three races over two days: 10K, half marathon and marathon. Europe&rsquo;s top distance runners will race alongside the masses, bringing the stars of the sport and their fans closer than ever before.
The marathon course will run from Brussels to Leuven, starting in the heart of the Belgian capital before reaching the finish in the historic heart of Leuven.
The European marathon champion had previously been crowned at the European Championships, but now the classic distance, and its finest exponents, will take the spotlight at their very own festival of running, with medals awarded for individual and team honours at all three distances. Mass-race participants can also compete for medals in brand-new &lsquo;country ranking&rsquo; competition.
&ldquo;The European Running Championships symbolises my vision of a sport that really is for everyone,&rdquo; said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov. &ldquo;Young and old, male and female, fast and slow, big and small, elite and amateur will all compete together and simultaneously in mass marathon, half marathon and 10km races, with global and national ranking places on offer.&rdquo;
Karamarinov added: &ldquo;For too long, athletics has been seen as a rarefied activity, the preserve of only the super-fit and the super-gifted. All children, and a growing number of adults across our continent, take part in athletics, in the form of recreational running, every day. Yet many of them do not think of themselves as athletes. I am determined to bridge this gap.&rdquo;

<h2>European Athletics Indoor Championships</h2>
Hosts Netherlands topped the medal table at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships, winning an incredible seven gold medals, including five on the last evening session in the Omnisport Arena.
The programme concluded with Femke Bol, who was succeeded as individual 400m champion by teammate and training partner Lieke Klaver, anchoring the Netherlands to their third successive gold medal in the women's 4x400m. The Dutch won all three relay events on the programme with their gold rush beginning on the first day in the inaugural mixed 4x400m before concluding with double gold in the 4x400m finals.
Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen made history by becoming the joint most successful male athlete at the European Athletics Indoor Championships history, equalling Valeriy Borzov's haul of seven gold medals after defending his 1500m and 3000m titles. Only Czech shot putter Helena Fibingerova is ahead of Ingebrigtsen having won an unprecedented eight titles between 1973 and 1985.
The championships were also highlighted by a pair of European records. Switzerland's Ditaji Kambundji stormed to gold in the 60m hurdles in 7.67, the joint second fastest time in history, and Norway's Sander Skotheim became the first European to break the 6500 point-barrier for the seven-event discipline, improving his continental record from 6484 points to 6558 points.&nbsp;
Additionally, eight world leading marks were set across the four days of competition.&nbsp;
The 2027 European Athletics Indoor Championships will take place in the Spanish city of Valencia from 4-7 March.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>European Athletics Team Championships</h2>
Italy were crowned champions at the European Athletics Team Championships for the first time in Silesia ahead of reigning champions and hosts Poland and four-time winners Germany.
In a new-look format for the event, all three divisions were held under one roof in the same location across six days as part of the third edition of the European Games in Krakow-Małopolska.&nbsp;
Ireland were the first champions to be anointed in the 3rd Division where Albania's Luiza Gega also created history by becoming the joint most successful athlete in European Athletics Team Championships history, her wins in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase taking her tally up to 11 victories.
Hungary dominated the 2nd Division, winning the title ahead of Ukraine and Lithuania who pipped Slovenia for the third promotion spot by an agonising 0.5 points. Both Hungary and Lithuania will be making their debuts in the top division of the European Athletics Team Championships in 2025.
In the main spectacle which occupied the last three days of the championships, Italy improved on their runner-up finish from two years ago with a dominant victory. The Italians won seven of the 37 events and tallied a score of 426.5 points ahead of Poland (402.5 points) and Germany (387.5. points) with Spain fourth with 352 points.
At the other end of the table, Norway, T&uuml;rkiye and Belgium occupied the last three places and were relegated into the 2nd Division in 2025. &nbsp;The Belgian team were relegated despite the best efforts of shot putter-turned hurdler Jolien Boumkwo who garnered worldwide admiration and attention after stepping in as a last minute replacement for the injured Anne Zagre in the 100m hurdles.&nbsp;
Individual highlights across the six days included Femke Bol from the newly promoted Netherlands winning the 400m in 49.82 to smash her championship record of 50.37 and Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh winning the discus in the 2nd Division with 69.94m to break the championship record held by his coach Gerd Kanter.&nbsp;
The 2025 edition of the European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division will be held in Madrid, Spain from 27-29 June.&nbsp;

<h2>SPAR European Cross Country Championships</h2>
This 2024 SPAR European Cross Country Championships was held in Antalya, T&uuml;rkiye and marked the 30th edition of a championships which was added to the calendar in 1994.&nbsp;
Jakob Ingebrigtsen maintained his unbeaten run at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, winning his seventh individual gold medal and his third senior gold medal, beating Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa who returned to the podium individually for the first time since 2019.
His teammate Nadia Battocletti made history by becoming the first woman in championship history to win individual titles across all three age-groups, the Roma 2024 5000m and 10,000m champion upgrading her 2023 silver medal from to gold in 2024.&nbsp;Additionally, there was also gold for Italy in the mixed relay.
Once again, Great Britain topped the medal table in Antalya. The British squad won three individual gold medals with Innes FitzGerald and Will Barnicoat defending their women's U20 and men's U23 titles with Phoebe Anderson making it a Great Britain U23 double by taking gold in the women's race in this age category.
After just missing out on U20 gold last year, 2024 European Athletics Rising Star Niels Laros from the Netherlands made amends by kicking to an expected victory in the men's U20 race.
Intriguingly, Great Britain have now won 199 medals in SPAR European Cross Country Championships history which means someone will have the honour of picking up their 200th medal at the 2025 edition which takes place in&nbsp;Lagoa, Portugal.&nbsp;

<h2>European Throwing Cup</h2>
The event which took place for the first time in 2001 under its initial alias of the European Throwing Winter Challenge traditionally marks the beginning of the outdoor season for European throwers.&nbsp;
At the 2025 European Throwing Cup, Germany topped the medal table with four gold medals and 10 in total ahead of Italy and Ireland, the latter enjoying their best ever event with three medals including a historic gold for Nicola Tuthill in the U23 women's hammer.&nbsp;
Three world leading performances were set in Nicosia, including a European Throwing Cup record of 77.07m from Finland's Silja Kosonen in the hammer. Her performance smashed the previous long-standing record of 75.05m set by world record-holder Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland back in 2009.
2024 European Athletics Rising Star Adriana Vilagos from Serbia also began her season with a world lead and national record of 66.88m in the javelin while Sweden's Olympic and European finalist Vanessa Kamga defeated a highly competitive field in the discus, winning with another world lead of 63.25m.&nbsp;
Other highlights included Germany's Henrik Janssen defeating European champion Kristjan Ceh in the discus, 65.77m to 65.69m, and there was also home success for Cyprus in the very first event on the programme with world U20 champion Iosif Kesidis winning the U23 hammer with 72.96m. This was Cyprus' first ever gold medal in the history of the European Throwing Cup.&nbsp;
The 2026 and 2027 editions of the European Throwing Cup will also be held in Nicosia.&nbsp;

<h2>European Race Walking Team Championships</h2>
This is an event dedicated to race walking organised on a biennial basis. This event was established in 1996 and was formerly called, until 2021, the European Race Walking Cup.&nbsp;
It now includes a senior men's and women's 20km and 35km and 10km races for men and women in the U20 category. The team scores are calculated by aggregating the positions of the first three finishers (senior) or two finishers (U20). The team with the lowest aggregate of points will be judged the winner.
At the 2023 European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady, Spain topped the medal table again with six gold medals. Their star performer was Maria Perez who won the 35km race walk title in a world record of 2:37:15 and led Spain to a clean sweep of the individual medals.
Perez provided the second half of a Spanish double after Alvaro Martin won the men's event in a national record of 2:25:35 and also led Spain to the team title.
The Italians also performed brilliantly in Podebrady, coming away with five gold medals in total. Francesco Fortunato won the 20km race walk ahead of two-time winner Perseus Karlstrom and his more revered teammate Massimo Stano and Diego Giampaolo and Giulia Gabriele swept the U20 10km titles for Italy.
At the other end of the age spectrum, 39-year-old Antigoni Ntrismpioti proved her reputation as a fine championship competitor. The double European champion from Munich 2022 won the 20km race walk title for Greece, just ahead of Olympic champion Antonella Palmisano from Italy.&nbsp;
The 2025 edition of the European Race Walking Team Championships will also be held in Podebrady again on 18 May.&nbsp;

<h2>European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships</h2>
The European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships is the forerunner to the European Mountain Running Championships and&nbsp;combines the disciplines of trail and mountain running with races for both elite and recreational athletes.
The first edition of the European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships took place in El Paso on the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canary Islands on 1-3 July 2022 and the 2024 edition took place in Annecy, France from 31 May-2 June 2024.
At the 2024 edition, France topped the medal table thanks to their exploits in the trail races in which the swept all eight medals. The French took clean sweeps in both the individual races and the team titles as well.&nbsp;
The 2026 edition is due to take place in Slovenia.&nbsp;

<h2>European Athletics U20 Championships</h2>
This biennial championships was first held in 1970 after three editions of the unofficial European Junior Games which started in 1964 and the most recent event, which now goes by the name of the European Athletics U20 Championships, was held in Jerusalem, Israel from 7-10 August 2023.
Germany dominated proceedings in the Givat Ram Stadium, winning eight gold medals and 23 medals in total, including a clean sweep in the women's discus. Outstanding individual performers across the four days included Niels Laros from the Netherlands who swept the 1500/5000m titles and Latvia's Agate Caune, a dominant winner in the 3000m and 5000m.
Caune set one of two championship records in Jerusalem, shattering the 5000m record with 15:03.85. The other championship record was set by Italy's Mattia Furlani who won the long jump title with 8.23m, one of three jumps in the final which surpassed the previous championship record of 8.17m which dated back to 1987.
The 2025 edition of the European Athletics U20 Championships takes place in Tampere, Finland from 7-10 August.

<h2>European Athletics U18 Championships</h2>
The European Athletics U18 Championships is a biennial competition for European athletes under the age of 18 in the year of competition.
The newest addition to the calendar of age-group events, the European Athletics U18 Championships was created to promote higher-level competition among the most talented members of this age group in Europe and provide a stepping stone to the U20 age group. The first edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships was held in Tbilisi, Georgia in 2016.
At the most recent edition of the championships in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia from 18-21 July, Italy topped the medal table with seven gold medals. Elisa Valensin won the 200m title in a championship best of 23.09 before anchoring Italy to gold in the medley relay. In doing so, she became the only athlete to come away with two gold medals.&nbsp;
The championships was also highlighted by European U18 bests from home favourite Laura Frlickova who blasted to a 12.86 clocking in the 100m hurdles to smash the previous mark of 12.98 set by current European champion Cyrena Samba-Mayela in 2017. She duly won the final the following day in 12.97 to win Slovakia's first ever gold medal at the European U18 Championships.
Michal Rada decimated the European U18 best in the 400m hurdles, winning the gold in an unopposed 49.42 to become the first European in his age-group to break the 50 second-barrier in the U18 400m hurdles. Remarkably, he provided the second part of a twin double after Nina Radova came home with the 400m hurdles title in the women's race.
The 2026 European Athletics U18 Championships will take place in Rieti, Italy.
