European Athletics is delighted to announce that the first ever edition of the European Running Championships will take place in Leuven and Brussels on 12-13 April 2025, with the masses joining the elites for a festival of running on the streets of Belgium.
The inaugural edition will see road races take centre stage at a standalone European Championships, featuring three races over two days: 10K, half marathon and marathon. Europe&rsquo;s top distance runners will race alongside the masses, bringing the stars of the sport and their fans closer than ever before.
The marathon course will run from Brussels to Leuven, starting in the heart of the Belgian capital before reaching the finish in the historic heart of Leuven.
The European marathon champion had previously been crowned at the European Championships, but now the classic distance, and its finest exponents, will take the spotlight at their very own festival of running, with medals awarded for individual and team honours at all three distances. Mass-race participants can also compete for medals in brand-new &lsquo;country ranking&rsquo; competition.
&ldquo;The European Running Championships symbolises my vision of a sport that really is for everyone,&rdquo; said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov. &ldquo;Young and old, male and female, fast and slow, big and small, elite and amateur will all compete together and simultaneously in mass marathon, half marathon and 10km races, with global and national ranking places on offer.&rdquo;
Karamarinov added: &ldquo;For too long, athletics has been seen as a rarefied activity, the preserve of only the super-fit and the super-gifted. All children, and a growing number of adults across our continent, take part in athletics, in the form of recreational running, every day. Yet many of them do not think of themselves as athletes. I am determined to bridge this gap.&rdquo;

Italy were crowned champions at the European Athletics Team Championships for the first time in Silesia ahead of reigning champions and hosts Poland and four-time winners Germany.
In a new-look format for the event, all three divisions were held under one roof in the same location across six days as part of the third edition of the European Games in Krakow-Małopolska.&nbsp;
Ireland were the first champions to be anointed in the 3rd Division where Albania's Luiza Gega also created history by becoming the joint most successful athlete in European Athletics Team Championships history, her wins in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase taking her tally up to 11 victories.
Hungary dominated the 2nd Division, winning the title ahead of Ukraine and Lithuania who pipped Slovenia for the third promotion spot by an agonising 0.5 points. Both Hungary and Lithuania will be making their debuts in the top division of the European Athletics Team Championships in 2025.
In the main spectacle which occupied the last three days of the championships, Italy improved on their runner-up finish from two years ago with a dominant victory. The Italians won seven of the 37 events and tallied a score of 426.5 points ahead of Poland (402.5 points) and Germany (387.5. points) with Spain fourth with 352 points.
At the other end of the table, Norway, T&uuml;rkiye and Belgium occupied the last three places and were relegated into the 2nd Division in 2025. &nbsp;The Belgian team were relegated despite the best efforts of shot putter-turned hurdler Jolien Boumkwo who garnered worldwide admiration and attention after stepping in as a last minute replacement for the injured Anne Zagre in the 100m hurdles.&nbsp;
Individual highlights across the six days included Femke Bol from the newly promoted Netherlands winning the 400m in 49.82 to smash her championship record of 50.37 and Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh winning the discus in the 2nd Division with 69.94m to break the championship record held by his coach Gerd Kanter.&nbsp;
The 2025 edition of the European Athletics Team Championships will be held in Madrid, Spain.

<h2>SPAR European Cross Country Championships</h2>
The most important cross country event on the European calendar attracts the best distance running talents from across the continent in the U20, U23 and senior categories for both genders with a mixed relay the most recent addition to the programme.
The 2023 edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Brussels on 10 December with as many as 8000 people in attendance in a muddy and Laeken Park for the 29th edition of the championships.&nbsp;
The event finished on a historic note as France's Yann Schrub became the first French athlete to win the senior men's title while individual bronze medallist Robin Hendrix also led Belgium to their first ever senior men's team title.
Great Britain topped the medal table yet again with seven gold medals, including three individual title. Megan Keith won the women's U23 race by an incredible winning margin of 83 seconds, by far the biggest in the history of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships while Innes FitzGerald and Will Barnicoat won the women's U20 and men's U23 titles respectively.
Norway's Karoline Bjerkeli Gr&oslash;vdal won the senior women's title in dominant fashion for her third successive title and her 10th individual medal in championship history. Other winners in Laeken Park included France in the mixed relay and Denmark's Axel Vang Christensen who outsprinted the hot favourite Niels Laros from the Netherlands for the men's U20 title.&nbsp;
The 2024 edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, which will mark the 30th anniversary edition, takes place for the first time in Antalya, T&uuml;rkiye while the 2025 edition has been awarded to Lagoa, Portugal.&nbsp;

<h2>European Throwing Cup</h2>
The event which took place for the first time in 2001 under its initial alias of the European Throwing Winter Challenge traditionally marks the beginning of the outdoor season for European throwers.&nbsp;
At the 2024 European Throwing Cup in Leiria, Ukraine topped the medal table for the second edition in succession courtesy of gold medals from Mykhailo Kokhan and Artur Felfner in the hammer and javelin respectively.&nbsp;
The 16 gold medals were evenly distributed between 13 nations with Katrine Koch Jacobsen creating history for Denmark by winning her country's first ever gold medal in the European Throwing Cup in the hammer, defeating a field which included all three medallists from the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships.
And fittingly, the last senior gold medal went in the direction of the hosts. Irina Rodrigues, who is also a qualified doctor and juggles her profession alongside her athletics career, launched the discus out to a world lead and Portuguese record of 66.60m for an emotional and popular victory. &nbsp;&nbsp;
Rodrigues defeated a strong line-up which includes Germany's Shanice Craft and France's 44-year-old Melina Robert-Michon who threw 62.46m in the sixth round to take the bronze medal, her eleventh medal in the history of the European Throwing Cup.&nbsp;
The next three editions of the European Throwing Cup will be held in the Cypriot capital of Nicosia. The 2025 edition takes place on 15-16 March.&nbsp;

<h2>European Race Walking Team Championships</h2>
This is an event dedicated to race walking organised on a biennial basis. This event was established in 1996 and was formerly called, until 2021, the European Race Walking Cup.&nbsp;
It now includes a senior men's and women's 20km and 35km and 10km races for men and women in the U20 category. The team scores are calculated by aggregating the positions of the first three finishers (senior) or two finishers (U20). The team with the lowest aggregate of points will be judged the winner.
At the 2023 European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady, Spain topped the medal table again with six gold medals. Their star performer was Maria Perez who won the 35km race walk title in a world record of 2:37:15 and led Spain to a clean sweep of the individual medals.
Perez provided the second half of a Spanish double after Alvaro Martin won the men's event in a national record of 2:25:35 and also led Spain to the team title.
The Italians also performed brilliantly in Podebrady, coming away with five gold medals in total. Francesco Fortunato won the 20km race walk ahead of two-time winner Perseus Karlstrom and his more revered teammate Massimo Stano and Diego Giampaolo and Giulia Gabriele swept the U20 10km titles for Italy.
At the other end of the age spectrum, 39-year-old Antigoni Ntrismpioti proved her reputation as a fine championship competitor. The double European champion from Munich 2022 won the 20km race walk title for Greece, just ahead of Olympic champion Antonella Palmisano from Italy.&nbsp;
The 2025 edition of the European Race Walking Team Championships will also be held in Podebrady.&nbsp;

<h2>European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships</h2>
The inaugural European Athletics Off-Road Running Championships, an innovative continental championship that combines the disciplines of trail and mountain running, took place in El Paso on the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canary Islands on 1-3 July 2022.
The next edition will be held in Annecy, France from 31 May - 2 June 2024.

<h2>European Athletics U20 Championships</h2>
This biennial championships was first held in 1970 after three editions of the unofficial European Junior Games which started in 1964 and the most recent event, which now goes by the name of the European Athletics U20 Championships, was held in Jerusalem, Israel from 7-10 August 2023.
Germany dominated proceedings in the Givat Ram Stadium, winning eight gold medals and 23 medals in total, including a clean sweep in the women's discus. Outstanding individual performers across the four days included Niels Laros from the Netherlands who swept the 1500/5000m titles and Latvia's Agate Caune, a dominant winner in the 3000m and 5000m.
Caune set one of two championship records in Jerusalem, shattering the 5000m record with 15:03.85. The other championship record was set by Italy's Mattia Furlani who won the long jump title with 8.23m, one of three jumps in the final which surpassed the previous championship record of 8.17m which dated back to 1987.
The 2025 edition of the European Athletics U20 Championships takes place in Tampere, Finland.

<h2>European Athletics U18 Championships</h2>
The European Athletics U18 Championships is a biennial competition for European athletes under the age of 18 in the year of competition.
The newest addition to the calendar of age-group events, the European Athletics U18 Championships was created to promote higher-level competition among the most talented members of this age group in Europe and provide a stepping stone to the U20 age group. The first edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships was held in Tbilisi, Georgia in 2016.
The third edition of the championships in Jerusalem, Israel in 2022 were highlighted by 15-year-old Topi Parviainen from Finland setting a European U18 best of 84.52m in the javelin, Mattia Furlani winning gold medals in both the long jump and high jump and Serbia's Angelina Topic clearing 1.92m in the high jump.
Once again, Great Britain topped the medal table in Jerusalem with eight gold medals, all of which came in women's events. Standout highlights included Mia McIntosh winning the 100m hurdles in a championship record of 13.05 and Faith Akinbileje winning gold in the 200m and helping the Brits to the medley relay title.
The fourth edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships will be held in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia from 18-21 July 2024 and will be the second major European event to be held in Slovakia after the 2017 SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Samorin.&nbsp;
The host city of Bansk&aacute; Bystrica is located on the Hron River and home to 76,000 inhabitants, making it the sixth most populous municipality in Slovakia.&nbsp;
The 2026 European Athletics U18 Championships will take place in Rieti, Italy.

<h2>European Athletics U23 Championships</h2>
The European Athletics U23 Championships was introduced in 1997, ostensibly to facilitate the transition between the U20 and senior ranks.
The first edition of the championships were held in Turku and the latest edition returned to Finnish soil, specifically the city of Espoo, situated just outside Helsinki, which staged the four-day championships from 13-16 July 2023.
And the Finns put on a great show in Espoo, winning three gold medals courtesy of Silja Kosonen in the women's hammer, Saga Vanninen in the heptathlon and Juho Alasaari in the men's pole vault.
Meanwhile, a clean sweep of golds in the 5000m and 10,000m races and a championship-record winning performance by the women's 4 x 100m team helped Great Britain &amp; Northern Ireland top the medal table with seven golds in total.
There were championship records from the likes of Lithuania's Mykolas Alekna who snatched world champion Kristjan Ceh&rsquo;s mark in a dominant men&rsquo;s discus performance and&nbsp;European indoor and outdoor bronze medallist Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland who struck gold in the women's 100m hurdles, among others.
Greece's European javelin champion Elina Tzengko added the U23 title to her senior and U20 titles, while the Netherlands&rsquo; Alida van Daalen won double gold with victory in the shot put and the discus.
In the decathlon, Norway's Markus Rooth held off his teammate Sander Skotheim in an exciting 1-2 finish and Norway will be looking to deliver more medals on home soil in the next edition, which takes place in Bergen in 2025.

<h2>European Athletics Championships&nbsp;</h2>
As the jewel in the crown of events organised by European Athletics, the biennial European Athletics Championships are the showcase of the very best that the continental branch of the sport has to offer.
At the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships from 15-21 August, part of the wider multisport European Championships from 11-21 August, no fewer than 11 championship records were set across the seven days of competition in the city's hallowed Olympic Stadium, the venue for the1972 Olympic Games.&nbsp;
Highlights included Armand Duplantis defending his pole vault title and improving his championship record to 6.06m, Femke Bol winning a historic treble in the 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, Jakob Ingebrigtsen defending his 1500m and 5000m titles and 19-year-old Mykolas Alekna from Lithuania winning the discus with a championship record of 69.78m.
Hosts Germany topped the medal table with seven gold medals ahead of Great Britain &amp; NI with six. Germany had an especially memorable hour on the second evening session with Niklas Kaul and Gina Luckenkemper winning gold medals in the decathlon and 100m respectively.&nbsp;
The 2024 European Athletics Championships will take place in Rome from 7-12 June some 50 years after the Italian capital last staged the championships.
