1952 Olympic shot put champion Galina Zybina died on Saturday (10) at the age of 93.

Zybina won a full set of medals for the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games, adding silver to her tally in 1956 and then bronze in Tokyo 1964.

Zybina also won the shot put title at the 1954 European Athletics Championships in Berne but her talent also extended across the other throwing events. She also won bronze medals in the discus (1954) and javelin (1950) at the European Athletics Championships.

But the shot put was her specialist discipline and she has the distinction of being the first woman in history to break the 16 metre-barrier with 16.18m in 1953 before eventually improving her world record to 16.76m.
