The Estonian Athletics Association has announced that 1958 European decathlon silver medallist Uno Palu from Estonia died on Monday (15) at the age of 90.

Competing for the Soviet Union, he was fourth in the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games and went on to win silver at the Stockholm 1958 European Athletics Championships behind his Soviet teammate and eventual three-time champion Vasiliy Kuznetsov.

Based in Tallinn, Palu became national champion on 14 occasions and was awarded the Estonian Athlete of the Year prize in 1956 and 1958. He remained an icon of the sport in his home country with a biography entitled ‘Decathlon and rock'n'roll. The story of Uno Palu’ published last year to mark his 90th birthday.

European Athletics sends its condolences to his close family, friends and everyone at Estonian Athletics Association.
