The European Throwing Cup has been awarded to the Romanian city of Arad in 2016, the competition is held over two days on 12-13 March. The event is designed for athletes specialising in discus, javelin, hammer throwing and shot put.

“European Athletics is pleased that Arad will host the 2016 European Throwing Cup for the first time in Romania, an event which has historically provided an interesting early season opportunity for the continent's top throwers,” said European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.

The competition is intended to counterbalance the fact that indoor athletics meetings cannot host the longer throwing events and allows athletes to test their form ahead of the forthcoming outdoor season.

“I would like to thank the Romanian athletics federation, the local organising committee and the city of Arad for their efforts now and in the coming months in the organisation of this important European Athletics event,” President Hansen added.

With a rich industrial and commercial tradition, Arad is one of the most prosperous cities in Romania. It's also an important transportation hub located on the MureÈ™ River and serves as a junction point in western Romania, linking Western Europe to South-East Europe and Middle Eastern countries.

Arad International Airport with the largest and most modern cargo terminal in western Romania, is situated only 4 km west from the city centre.

European Athletics looks forward to welcoming some of the best European, world and Olympic competitors from across the continent in March, when they will battle for victory while also enjoying the city of Arad and Romanian hospitality.
