Beitia in the honours again

Home

Ruth Beitia, who briefly ‘retired’ from track and field after the Olympic Games in London, has been rewarded for her decision to return.

The high jumper has this week been named Spain’s Athlete of the Year, retaining her title after a vote from 114 representatives from different levels within the sport in her country.

Beitia, 34, came out on top having shown why she was right to carry on in 2013 where she won gold at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Göteborg in March before taking bronze at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow.

Masdeporte.as.com revealed that Beitia came top of the poll in a summer where Spain had some outstanding performances at the World Championships: long jumper Eusebio Caceres was fourth, Miguel Angel Lopez won bronze in the men’s 20km walk, Beatriz Pascual was sixth in the women’s 20km and Alessandra Aguilar was fifth in the marathon.

Beitia had already won this distinction last year after her golden success at the 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki before finishing fourth at the Olympics.

She took a break but then came back in style,

“After the return to competition, 2013 has been a great gift. It was the best season of my sporting life,' she told the Spanish federation’s website rfea.es.

She won in Göteborg with a jump of 1.99m and cleared 1.97m to share bronze in Moscow with Olympic champion Anna Chicherova as her Russian teammate Svetlana Shkolina won the event with 2.03m.

Beitia will receive the trophy in a ceremony in Madrid on December 10.

She will have the opportunity to preserve her title at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich next summer.
