Belgrade has a proud recent history of staging major events and has the distinction of being the only city to have hosted the European Athletics Indoor Championships (2017), World Athletics Indoor Championships (2022), SPAR European Cross Country Championships (2013) and the World Cross Country Championships (2024).

The 2027 European Running Championships further signals Belgrade’s commitment to hosting major athletics competitions and the city’s position as one of Europe’s foremost sporting cities.

The organisers of the European Running Championships which will be held on 17-18 April 2027, will be the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation, under the patronage of the City of Belgrade and the Ministry of Sports.

The event will also coincide with a significant milestone – the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Belgrade Marathon and the European Running Championships will also serve as an ideal prelude to the EXPO 2027 exhibition, titled ‘Play for Humanity’ which is set to take place in Belgrade from 15 May to 15 August 2027.

The programme for the 2027 European Running Championships incorporates a 10km, half marathon and marathon and the organisers expect at least 25,000 participants, including Europe’s elite distance runners who will contest for the mantle of European champion in both the individual and team events in each of the three races on the schedule.

“We are very pleased to announce the 2027 European Running Championships will be in Belgrade, a city which has an exceptional record of staging well-organised in-stadium and out-of-stadia major championships,” said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov.

“The European Running Championships is the newest major event on the European Athletics calendar and represents a core part of European Athletics’ running strategy to get as many people across the continent active and moving.

“One of the main objectives of the European Running Championships is to bring elite and non-elite distance runners together and we look forward to seeing runners of all abilities - from professional athletes to amateur runners - on the start-line and achieving their personal running goals in Belgrade in 2027,” added Karamarinov.

Speaking about the announcement, competition director of the Serbian Athletics Federation Predrag Momirovic said: “Another major event for our country! We are proud to have the opportunity to organise the European Running Championships in 2027 as part of the 40th Belgrade Marathon. This will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase Belgrade and Serbia in the best light.”

Director of the Belgrade Marathon Darko Habuš said: “This is a great victory for Serbia and Belgrade, and it is an enormous honour for the Belgrade Marathon and the Serbian Athletics Federation. We have been entrusted with great responsibility, and I have no doubt that our organisational team will justify this trust through hard work and dedication.

“We will do everything to meet - and even exceed - the highest organisational standards, and ensure that Belgrade hosts a true athletics spectacle. I have no doubt that we will be excellent hosts and that Serbia and our capital will send the best possible image to the world.”
