  • Big time ahead of Bahta and España

Meraf Bahta and Jesus España won European 5000m gold eight years apart - but both have an interesting few months ahead.

Sweden's Bahta delivered one of the performances of the European Athletics Championships in Zurich 2014 with her victory but injury ruled her out of the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in August.

Now she is back and the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Hyères on 13 December could become a target, an event where she also made the podium last year when she was third in the senior race (28:52) in Samokov, Bulgaria, behind British duo Gemma Steel (28:27) and Kate Avery (also 28:27).

Sveriges Radio report that Bahta, 26, is back in training with the Nordic Championships on 7 November in Gothenburg as the competition where she may return to action.

Her win in Zurich came in thrilling fashion as she held off the challenge of the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan to triumph by 0.40 in 15:31.39.

It is ironic that her comeback could be in Gothenburg because it was in the Swedish city in 2006 where España of Spain, won his 5000m crown in the Ullevi Stadium and beat Britain's Mo Farah in the process.

Now at the age of 37, he is turning his thoughts to a much longer distance - the marathon.

España plans to race the Seville Marathon on 21 February, report AS, where he will aim to go under 2:13:00.

Such a time this year would have put him close to Europe’s top 20 and it could signal a new major direction for the rest of España's career.

In 2006, his 5000m win came in an epic race, as he had enough speed in the final stages to beat Farah by 0.09, winning in 13:44.70.
