We put the question to you and you voted in huge numbers! After 48 hours of voting, Norway’s Karsten Warholm and Switzerland’s Ajla Del Ponte are your men’s and women’s Athletes of the Month for August.
Warholm achieved two sensational victories in the 400m hurdles in August. In his first race in the event since retaining his world title in Doha, Warholm powered to a 47.10 clocking in Monaco before eclipsing his European record in his next race with 46.87 in Stockholm - the second fastest time in history. He returned to the track later in the programme to win the 400m in a European leading 45.05.
Warholm beat strong Nordic competition from teammate Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the newly crowned European 1500m record-holder, and Swedes Daniel Stahl and Armand Duplantis.
On the women’s side, there was a first-time winner with Ajla Del Ponte prevailing ahead of a sparkling short-list. The Swiss sprinter finished ahead of Nadine Visser from the Netherlands as well as Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Great Britain’s Laura Muir in the voting.
Del Ponte has built on a strong indoor season, extending her unbeaten run in the 100m all the way through August. She achieved significant victories in Monaco (11.16), Bydgoszcz (11.18) and Stockholm (11.20).
