  • Double gold for Ingebrigtsen and Jæger at the Norwegian Championships

Less than 48 hours after clocking a 7:27.05 lifetime best and European U23 record over 3000m at the Rome Diamond League on Thursday night, Jakob Ingebrigtsen embarked on a middle distance double at the Norwegian Championships in Bergen on 19-20 September.

Competing on the day of his 20th birthday, Ingebrigtsen marked the occasion by running a solo 3:33.93 in the 1500m final to win by more than 13 seconds on Saturday (19) before returning to the track less than one hour later to qualify for the 800m final.

Ingebrigtsen is the reigning European 1500m and 5000m champion but he demonstrated his range extends down to two laps of the track by defeating the 800m specialists on Sunday (20) in 1:48.72. Ingebrigtsen was registered for all events on the Norwegian Championships between 800m and 10,000m, as well as the 3000m steeplechase, before setting on the 800m and 1500m.

One week after breaking the world U18 heptathlon best, Henriette Jæger was in prolific form in the senior ranks. Only 17, Jæger won gold medals in both the 200m and 400m - 23.60 (-2.0 m/s) and 52.90 - and was also third in the long jump with 6.04m.

Karsten Warholm was also making a quick turnaround after competing in the Rome Diamond League and the two-time world champion concluded his stellar season with a five second-plus victory in the 400m hurdles in 48.23.

In cold conditions and without any significant opposition on show, Warholm’s time in Bergen was understandably the slowest of his season although nobody else except for Warholm this season has run faster than his winning time on Sunday afternoon.

Even though the coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement or cancellation of the two major events scheduled for the summer, Warholm can still reflect back on a hugely successful albeit abbreviated season.

In the space of five weeks, Warholm won all six of his races by a one second-plus winning margin. He lowered his European record to 46.87 in the Stockholm Diamond League and also produced two more performances which rank inside the world all-time top-10 with 47.07 in Rome and 47.08 in Berlin.

Warholm’s training partner Amalie Iuel won the women’s 400m hurdles title in 55.63 ahead of 18-year-old combined eventer Andrea Rooth in 56.95. Rooth also won the 100m hurdles title in 13.50. After clocking 2:01.08 in the 800m heats, world leader Hedda Hynne won the final in 2:03.64.

The individual highlight of the championships was the men’s javelin in which Moldova’s Andrian Mardare threw 83.60m to displace Bulgaria’s Mark Slavov who improved his lifetime best from 74.76m to 78.28m in the second round before improving to 83.40m in the third round which also surpassed the previous championship record.
