World pole vault record-holder Armand Duplantis is one of eight athletes to be named on the initial Swedish team for the Torun 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 4-7 March.

Duplantis famously won the 2018 European outdoor title in Berlin with a 6.05m clearance but he will be making his European indoor debut in the Arena Torun next month.

Duplantis is very familiar with the stadium after setting his first world record at the Copernicus Cup in Torun last February with a 6.17m clearance. Duplantis hasn’t quite reached those heights so far in 2021 although he does lead the world list with a 6.03m clearance.

Fellow world leader Khaddi Sagnia has also been pre-selected for the long jump along with European outdoor silver medallist Andreas Kramer in the 800m.

Swedish head coach Karin Torneklint said: “I am really looking forward to a championship again. We have longed for it for so long and there are many who have shown fantastic form already. I believe we will have a team of around 30 people once all the selections are complete.”

The full team will be announced on 23 February and the list of initially selected Swedish athletes can be found here.
