World indoor champion Simon Ehammer leads the men’s heptathlon after day one of the X-Athletics meeting in Aubiere, France on Saturday (25).

The Swiss athlete, who won this competition last year, has accumulated 3448 points after the first four disciplines. His strongest event is the long jump, in which he has won both world and European bronze medals and although he wasn’t quite at his best, a leap of 7.82m (1015 points) gave him a tight grip on the competition from the second discipline onwards.

He also 60m (6.88), shot put (13.92) and high jump (1.98m) were unspectacular, but solid enough to give him an overnight lead from France’s Luc Brewin on 3401.

Brewin enjoyed a breakthrough day, logging new personal bests in the 60m (6.81), shot put (14.06m) and high jump (1.95m). Third place is international teammate Teo Bastien, bronze medallist from the Tallinn 2021 European Athletics U20 Championships, on 3389 after setting new personal bests in the 60m (7.02) and shot put (14.33m).

Desailly leads indoor heptathlon

Ahead of the single day women’s pentathlon on Sunday (26), the first day of a women’s indoor heptathlon took centre stage. France’s Noémie Desailly leads the competition with 3240 points after a consistent series of 60m (7.64), long jump (6.01m), shot put (13.29m) and high jump (1.55m).
