  • European 5000m champion Klosterhalfen headlines Germany’s team for La Mandria Park

European 5000m champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen will be to the fore of a strong German team in the senior women’s race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Piemonte-La Mandria Park on 11 December.

Klosterhalfen, who followed up her 5000m title in Munich with a sensational victory in the Valencia Half Marathon in 65:41 on her debut at the distance, will be looking for her first individual senior medal at the championships after winning the U20 title in 2015 and 2016 and U23 silver in 2017.

The German team also includes Alina Reh, who won gold in the U23 race ahead of Klosterhalfen in 2017 before stepping up to win individual bronze at the 2021 European Cross Country Championships. Reh also won the German cross country title last weekend ahead of Hanna Klein and Miriam Dattke, both of whom have also been selected.

The senior men’s team is headed by German champion and former European U23 cross country silver medallist Samuel Fitwi and Sam Parsons, who was sixth in the 5000m at the European Athletics Championships.

Emma Heckel, who won U20 silver last year and led Germany to the team title, steps up to the U23 ranks while their mixed relay team includes Elena Burkard and Christoph Kessler.

Schrub and Amdouni lead France’s team for La Mandria Park

Reigning European 10,000m bronze medallist Yann Schrub and 2018 European 10,000m champion Morhad Amdouni feature on France’s team of 40 athletes for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.

Now 34, Amdouni will be making his eighth appearance at the European Cross Country Championships. He has amassed three top-10 finishes in the senior race and won gold in the U20 race all the way back in 2007.

However, two notable absentees on the French team this year are Jimmy Gressier and Hugo Hay who led France to team gold at the 2021 European Cross Country Championships.

Gressier was an ever-present at the championships between 2015 and 2021, collecting nine individual or team titles across those six editions.

Belgium to travel to La Mandria Park with multiple medal prospects

Belgium has nominated 30 athletes for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.

There will be particularly high hopes in the senior men’s race whose team includes Michael Somers and former silver medallist Isaac Kimeli as well as in the mixed relay.

Belgium won bronze in Dublin twelve months ago and their team includes Stijn Baeten who ran the anchor leg of that bronze medal-winning team.

The SPAR European Cross Country Championships will return to Belgian soil next December with Brussels assigned the 2023 championships.

Rising Star Laros in the spotlight on the Dutch team

The outstanding 17-year-old Niels Laros will make his debut at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in the U20 race.

Laros, who eased to gold medals in the 1500m and 3000m at the European Athletics U18 Championships, will test his endurance over a distance of 6km against a field which is likely to include the three medallists from the U20 race in 2021.

The senior teams are headed by Mike Foppen and Silke Jonkman.

The full Dutch team can be found here.

Sweden to send strong women’s team to La Mandria Park

Sweden is sending a team of 13 athletes to compete at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.

And there is optimism the women’s senior race will yield individual and team medals. Their team of five includes last year’s silver medallist Meraf Bahta, 2019 bronze medallist Samrawit Mengsteab as well as the in-form Sarah Lahti.

The full Swedish team can be found here.
