Road races across the continent are committed to inspiring the public to #BeActive again as part of the second edition of the European Week of Sport which begins on 10 September.

The initiative has been driven by the European Commission to promote sport and physical activity and 35 European partners - including European Athletics - have signed up to endorse and promote the cornerstones of the Commission’s initiative.

With encouragement from European Athletics, 124 races across 24 countries this year will be staging events in conjunction with European Week of Sport. The week-long event will be officially opened in Kosice, Slovakia on Saturday and the city will be staging a 4.2km fun run - the #BeActive Warm Up Run - as part of the official Opening Ceremony.

The European Commission is keen to promote inclusiveness and accessibility with events during the European Week of Sport aimed at everyone - regardless of age, background or fitness level.

Road races such as the Vilnius Marathon on 11 September will be staging a kids’ run in order to promote the importance of physical activity among youths while the Copenhagen Half Marathon - one of the biggest events participating in the European Week of Sport - is staging 33 free “GoRun” races around Denmark, similar to parkrun, aimed at first-timers as well as the seasoned runners.

“It is great news that our Member Federations and hundreds of event organisers have responded for a second time to the European Week of Sport challenge and helped to promote the #BeActive message across Europe. That they can get tens of thousands out for road races and fun runs during the week demonstrates just one of the ways athletics can contribute to healthier lifestyles for people of all ages and that athletics is truly Your Sport for Life.” said European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.

The overarching campaign theme remains #BeActive and encourages everyone to be active not only during the European Week of Sport but to stay active all year long. More than five million people actively participated last year across 7000 events which elicited a sizeable responsible on social media with participants using the #BeActive hashtag.

The European Commissioner responsible for Sport Tibor Navracsics said: “After last year’s success, we want to keep the momentum going and show everyone that there are many opportunities to integrate sport and physical activity into our daily lives – regardless of our age, fitness level or background. Let’s work together to build a more active Europe.”

European Athletics has promoted the European Week of Sport in parallel with its Running for All project to place European Athletics and its Member Federations as active players in the running market.

In total, twelve races which have been certified by European Athletics Running For All will also be actively participating in the European Week of Sport.

The European Athletics Quality Road Race standards act as an assurance for road runners throughout Europe. They distinguish between races that respect the standards and those that haven’t sought certification or assessment. They form the foundation of Running for All, a strong recognisable brand for running activities throughout Europe.
