European Athletics announces with sorrow, the passing of Constantin “Titi” Mihail, one of the most valuable Romanian athletics coaches, at the age of 70.

Born on 24 July 1945 in Constanta, Mihail was perhaps the most important promoter of the sprint, hurdles and jumping disciplines.

He started off as an athlete during high school with the triple jump as his strongest event. His personal record of 14.45m was measured in 1966 while competing for ICF Bucharest.

Mihail eventually went on to coach Dinamo Bucharest (1987-1990) and at the federal level (1990-1997) where he earned his greatest successes. He then became the first Technical Director of the Romanian Athletics Federation from 1996-2007.

Throughout his impressive career as a coach, athletes under his guidance have won four silver medals at European Athletics Championships, gold and silver at the IAAF World Junior Championships and tens of medals at the Balkan Athletics Championships.

Between 2004-2008 he was a member of the Technical Commission of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee and retired in 2008.

Since 2013, Mihail had been assisting with the coordination of the Romanian team towards the Olympic Games in Rio 2016.

In recognition of his life’s work, he was awarded the National Medal of “Faithful Service” (2000) and the “Order of Merit Sports” (2004).

Constantin Mihail truly dedicated his life to athletics and developed the talent of several young athletes, by passing down his invaluable knowledge. He made an extraordinary contribution to athletics in Europe and his passion shall be missed.
