Over 170 registrations have been received for the international javelin symposium, to be held at the Tanhuvaara Sports Institute in Savonlinna on 21–22 November.

There is clear interest in javelin-throwing, coaching, and the related physiological phenomena, perhaps more than ever before.

The strong number of registered participants for the event on 21-22 November has come as somewhat of a surprise to the symposium’s main organiser, Jarmo Hirvonen, a teacher and coach at the institute and the personal coach to reigning European javelin champion Antti Ruuskanen.

“Our initial aim was to gather some 80 participants, but since all of the top Finnish throwers and coaches apart from Tero Pitkämäki are present we have received more demand than expected,” explains Hirvonen.

There will still be updates on Pitkämäki - who may well win his third Finnish Sportsman of the Year - through his coach, Hannu Kangas who will participate in the open panel discussion that concludes the symposium at about noon on Sunday.

Javelin legend Seppo Räty is also set to make a highly anticipated appearance.

“The symposium has also attracted important media attention with Finnish sports magazines Urheiluruutu and Sportmagasinet, along with German TV,” says Hirvonen.

The lineup of presenters is among the most impressive in the history of the event. Germany’s Thomas Röhler, who placed fourth at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, and his coach, Harro Schwuchow, will describe the route to the top and the strengths of German throwing.

Petteri Piironen, coach to both current world champion Julius Yego, of Kenya, and silver medallist Ihab Abdelrahman, of Egypt, will explain his coaching methods.

In addition, the presenters will include Sami Kalaja, an expert in skills acquisition, Ilkka Tulikoura, who specialises in sports medicine, and esteemed physiotherapist, Jarmo Ahonen.

“The symposium will offer a host of tips that can be applied across several sports not only athletics, along with presentations on physiotherapy, medicine, and skills training. Röhler’s presentation seems really interesting, since his training approach is extremely versatile,” comments Hirvonen.

In addition to the marketing team at the Tanhuvaara Sports Institute, Hirvonen credits European Athletics for successfully advertising the event across the continent.
