The Event & Competition Commission met at the European Athletics Headquarters in Lausanne on Monday and Tuesday (6-7) for its annual meeting, the first in-person meeting since 2019 owing to the pandemic.

Key points discussed included a review of the 2021 World Athletics Tour Silver and Bronze meetings and the Commission praised the overall quality of the meetings which included seven Silver meetings and 25 Bronze meetings.

The 2022 calendar, subject to approval by the European Athletics Executive Board, could see an expansion of meetings in both categories.

The Commission also indicated its support for the various age categories (U20, U23 and senior) at the European Cross Country Championships to have races of equal distances for both genders. This proposal will go to the European Athletics Council for approval at its November meeting, but the proposal is for both genders in the U20 categories to race over 4-6km, U23s to race over 6-8km and seniors to race over 8-10km; the spread of distance within each category to allow flexibility for championship organisers.

The entry standards for the European Athletics U18 Championships Jerusalem 2022, which will be held 4-7 July next year, were agreed and will be published in due course.

Among the other topics discussed was the issue of race walking events at the European Athletics Championships when these occur in the same year as the Olympic Games as well as the World Rankings and their use by European Athletics.
