  • Farah to defend Vitality London 10000 title; Muir to debut in the Westminster Mile

Mo Farah and Laura Muir will be among the star attractions in the elite races at the Vitality Westminster Mile and Vitality London 10000, both five-star certified events by European Athletics Running for All, on 26-27 May.

The Vitality Westminster Mile is the world's biggest timed mile event. Not only does it incorporate the British Championships for the distance, it also includes categories from U13 level all the way up to the Masters division. The programme also includes wheelchair events as well as a popular event for British Olympians active and retired.

The centrepiece of the weekend is the Vitality London 10000 on 27 May. Around 17,000 participants are expected to take part on a course around the City of London which takes in sights such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.

In the elite races, Farah knows the course better than most. He is looking to score his sixth victory later this month but he will be pushed hard by teammate Andrew Butchart. The Olympic and world 5000m finalist is back in excellent form after an injury-plagued 2018 campaign, clocking 13:18.16 for 5000m in Stanford earlier this month.

Stephanie Twell will also be defending her title in the women’s race. She will face opposition from former race winners Lily Partridge and Gemma Steel along with British 10,000m champion Charlotte Arter and Charlotte Purdue, who clocked a 2:25:38 lifetime best in the London Marathon last month.

In the Vitality Westminster Mile elite races, Muir will be making her debut in this race which also represents her first competitive appearance since defending both her 1500m and 3000m titles at the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships.

Muir faces reigning champion Melissa Courtney, who won bronze behind Muir over 3000m in Glasgow, while European indoor 800m champion Shelayna Oskan-Clarke steps up in distance.

In the men’s race, defending champion Chris O’Hare is hoping to become the first man in the history of the Vitality Westminster Mile to break the four-minute barrier.

The European Athletics Quality Road Race standards act as an assurance for road runners throughout Europe. They distinguish between races that respect the standards and those that haven’t sought certification or assessment. They form the foundation of Running for All, a strong recognisable brand for running activities throughout Europe.
