European Athletics has the duty to inform and explain that despite the existing regulations and established procedures, exceptional changes had to be allowed to the final entries for the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships from 7-12 June.

Major administrative mistakes by one Member Federation in the management of the final registration procedure have profoundly impacted the final entries for the event. Besides not entering two of its athletes, the mentioned Federation did not remove from the pre-entries list 12 of its athletes that will not compete, thus blocking 12 qualifying places and preventing several athletes from several Member Federations to be entered for Rome 2024.

After a very thorough analysis of the situation, considering the number of athletes impacted by the above and the consequences such mistakes can have on the athletes’ careers and their future in our sport, European Athletics has decided to allow for the penalised Member Federations to enter the subsequent qualified athletes to the 12 free places. The filling of those places will not be further extended, in case first eligible athletes will not confirm their participation within the set deadline.

Such decision was driven by the need to restore fairness - an inherent value to our sport, as well as by our athletes’ centred mission, as it is only fair that the athletes’ careers are not destroyed by administrative mistakes, so that their hard work and daily efforts on the tracks are rewarded at the appropriate stages as these Championships, and that athletics can truly remain their sport for life.

In line with the same principles European Athletics decided to also reinstate other athletes, who have been penalised by their federation's mistakes, reported in the 24 hours between the deadline for pre-entries and the deadline for final entries.

“While European Athletics stands by its regulations and procedures, we fully trust that in such situation the above decisions were needed to restore one of the fundamental principles behind our sport – fairness. And although this position was not taken lightly, it is certainly for the benefit of our athletes, for the success of the European Athletics Championships 2024 and the future of our sport” said Dobromir Karamarinov, European Athletics President.
