  • Focus of attention on the Ingebrigtsens at the Bislett Games

There will be representation from the Ingebrigtsen family across the programme at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Thursday (13) evening, the fifth stop of the IAAF Diamond League.

Filip Ingebrigtsen’s wife Astrid will be competing in the pre-programme 100m before older brother Henrik takes to the track in the 3000m. “This year my brothers have knocked me out of the Dream Mile with their faster times but don’t worry I will be back next year!” he joked at the press conference on Tuesday (11).

Henrik might have lost his national 1500m record to Filip last summer but the eldest of the trio in action tomorrow night will have an eye on the clock when he takes on the seven-and-a-half laps of the track at the famous Bislett Stadium. The time he has on his radar is Marius Bakken’s long-standing national record of 7:40.77.

“My PB is 7:42 so I would definitely like to improve on that and break the Norwegian record,” said Henrik, who won bronze at the distance at the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships. “It will depend on how the race goes but if we do not go out too fast then I think I have a chance and I can pick it up after the first kilometre and go on to achieve another record for Team Ingebrigtsen.”

The aforementioned Filip broke the family record in the 5000m with 13:11.75 in the Rome Diamond League last Thursday. He will return to familiar territory tomorrow when he lines up in the Dream Mile - the concluding event on the programme - alongside his younger brother Jakob, the reigning European 1500m and 5000m champion.

“It was good to be back and I feel I have recovered well and am ready for Thursday. It is a bit of a risk doing such a long race before a big race like Bislett but I felt good after the race and Jakob and I did a good workout [on Monday so I feel ready,” he said.

Jakob has had a somewhat chequered start to his outdoor campaign with illness forcing him to cancel two scheduled competitive races but the 18-year-old returned to competition in the Stockholm Diamond League when he ran a well-measured race to finish third in the 1500m.

That race was nearly a fortnight ago and Jakob has said he has made further progress in his preparations since then.

“In Stockholm I was recovering from illness but afterwards I have felt better and better so I think I am going into the race in great shape,” he said.

“It is a long season with Doha being in the autumn so we have split our season into two with two altitude camps. I am hoping my body responds well as Oslo is one of the biggest events of the season.”
