Serbians Milica Gardasevic and Angelina Topic produced the standout performances at the Filothei Women Gala on the outskirts of Athens on Wednesday (17) at the first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting in Europe in 2023.
In her first competition since her surprise elimination in qualifying at the European Athletics Indoor Championships, Gardasevic leapt out to an early season European leading mark of 6.74m in the long jump.
Her consistency was impressive. Gardasevic produced six valid jumps from as many efforts and all six marks would have sufficed for victory ahead of Romania’s Alina Rotaru-Kottmann with 6.50m.
Her Serbian teammate Topic also looks destined for more great things in 2023. Still only 17, the European bronze medallist and world U18 champion cleared 1.94m on her first attempt before three tries at a prospective national record of 1.97m.
With multiple winner and national heroine Ekaterini Stefanidi sadly bowing out at her opening height of 4.30m in the pole vault, Italy’s Elisa Molinarolo took the plaudits with a winning clearance at 4.37m ahead of Eleni-Klaudia Polak at 4.30m.
On the track, Cyprus’ Natalia Christofi won the 100m hurdles in 13.02 and Poland’s Magdalena Stefanowicz won the 100m in 11.61 into a headwind of 1.2 m/s.
