Great Britain’s Elliot Giles smashed the world road mile record in the New Balance KO Meile in Düsseldorf on Sunday (1) afternoon.
The former European 800m bronze medallist stopped the clock at 3:51.3 to smash the previous mark of 3:54.6 set by Kenya’s soon-to-be Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi in April.
Giles reached the 800m final at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships before reaching the 800m semifinal at his third successive Olympic Games appearance in Paris 2024.
Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Yared Nuguse from the United States was also under the previous world record in second in 3:51.9.
The road mile has been recognised as a world record event since last September.
