Grace Davies performed the official song of Roma 2024 at the closing ceremony on the final day of action at the European Athletics Championships.
A finalist in the UK's X Factor television show, Davies performed 'Illuminate' at the Medal Plaza in the Foro Italico on Wednesday, just ahead of Italian hero Gianmarco Tamberi collecting his gold for his high jump heroics the previous evening.
“I’ve never been on any sporting event of that kind,” she admits. “You think you know it’s going to be big, but then you are getting to the stadium and realize how big it actually is - it’s been mad, but so enjoyable.”
Writing the song was no easy task for singer. “It’s genuinely such a dream, and such a huge opportunity,” she said. “I feel so honoured to kind of be the voice for the athletes, especially within the stadium, when they are constantly hearing the song.”
“European Athletics wanted something that really gives athletes light during dark times and keeps them going,” said Davies, explaining the story behind Illuminate. “I can relate to having a moment where you need to perform and if you mess up, you’re out, I get it, what these athletes are experiencing.”
Becoming a part of this event as a singer is a great deal for Davies. “It’s such a privilege to kind of pass my voice onto them and hopefully bring some inspiration.”
