The north-west Hungarian city of Györ will stage the second edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships next July, a competition that has already proved to be a stepping stone to glory.

Two years after the great success of the inaugural championships in Tbilisi, the Aqua Sports Centre will be home for an event which was created at the European Athletics Congress in 2013.

There is nothing like the experience young stars can gain from such a sporting gathering: the atmosphere of being in an international team, the logistics of how an international championship can work, the excitement and nerves of waiting in the call room before your event.

Learning to deal with that at such a tender age can be so important for the years ahead and as Ukraine’s Alina Shukh showed in Tbilisi, winning gold on such a big stage can only enhance your career.

Shukh, who was then 17, broke her world U18 heptathlon best by over 100 points with 6186 as she triumphed last summer - and just a few months later she was rewriting a record held by one of the greatest.

In January this year, Shukh surpassed the world U20 indoor pentathlon record held by Swedish multi-event superstar Carolina Kluft since 2002 when she scored 4550 points.

She beat the old mark by 15 points and then appeared on the senior stage in Belgrade a few weeks later where she finished eleventh against the seniors at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

Shukh was even the top ranked multi-eventer going into the event, a brilliant position to be in less than a year after standing on top of the podium in Tbilisi.

Athletes born in 2001 and 2002 will be eligible for the championships that will run between 5-8 July 2018.
