Double Olympic champion Sifan Hassan was named Dutch Sportswoman of the Year for the second time in a row.

Hassan, who was also named European Athlete of the Year in October, won this accolade ahead of Olympic time trial champion Annemiek van Vleuten and short track skater Suzanne Schulting, who won five world titles this year.

Hassan almost pulled off a seemingly impossible treble in Tokyo by winning Olympic 5000m and 10,000m gold medals as well as bronze in the 1500m. She became one of a very small number of athletes to win three individual medals at the same Olympic Games including compatriot Fanny Blankers-Koen in London 1948.

She also set a world record in the 10,000m at the FBK Games in Hengelo with 29:06.82 and Hassan further demonstrated her versatility by setting a world lead of 4:14.74 in the mile in Brussels.

Hassan also revealed at the award ceremony that she has aspirations of moving up in distance in the not too distant future. “I want to run a marathon one year before the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024,” she said.

Hassan was unable to attend the award ceremony after testing positive for coronavirus but she is feeling good and isn’t eliciting any symptoms.
