Norway has named a team of 19 athletes for the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Championships from 1-3 March including their two gold medallists from the European Championships in Berlin last summer.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen famously swept the 1500m and 5000m titles in the German capital last year and the 18-year-old has entered both the 1500m and 3000m in Glasgow. He will be joined by his older brothers Filip who has also entered both events while Henrik will be only contesting the 3000m.
The surprise inclusion on the Norwegian team is world and European 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm. The European Indoor Championships didn’t feature in his initial plans but the 22-year-old will go in search of his first indoor title on the 400m flat.
'Leif Olav Alnes and I have been discussing and considering for and against participating in the European Indoor Championships for a while, but in the end, we landed on a yes,” said Warholm.
Warholm is the only European to have broken the 46 second-barrier for the 400m in 2019. He broke his national record with 45.56 in Ulsteinvik in January before approaching that mark with 45.65 at the Nordenkampen in Baerum.
Another medal contender on the Norwegian team is European 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal who is also making her debut at a major indoor championships. Grovdal is fourth on the European list with 8:44.68 which bettered Ingrid Kristiansen’s national indoor record.
Norway won one medal at the 2017 European Indoor Championships in Belgrade with Henrik Ingebrigtsen winning silver in the 3000m behind Spain’s Adel Mechaal.
