Ahead of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Antalya, Türkiye, on 8 December 2024, organisers have unveiled an exciting sustainability strategy designed to minimise the environmental impact of the event and promote a greener future for athletics events.
Committed to making a meaningful difference, the Local Organising Commiotte is encouraging all attendees to join in their sustainability efforts. The goal is clear: to reduce the carbon footprint of athletics events and create a lasting, positive impact. The initiative is aligned with the Region of Kepez’s sustainability priorities and includes a range of impactful actions:
- Paper Reduction
- Reducing Single-Use Plastics
- Land Regeneration
- Increased Participation in Sports
- Ecosystem Preservation
- Boosting the Local Economy
- Effective Waste Management
One of the most innovative aspects of the strategy is the sustainable legacy being created for Dokuma Park (below), the championship venue. After the event, a new running course will be built for public use, encouraging fitness long after the final race.
Additionally, olive tree seeds will be gifted to all medallists to plant in the Botanical Garden within the park, symbolising a commitment to environmental stewardship.
The event will also feature a beach cleaning initiative, aiming to raise awareness about the environmental effects of mass tourism in Antalya and contribute to preserving its beautiful coastline.
The plan marks a significant step in making athletics not only a celebration of sport but a celebration of sustainability and community. For more details on the full sustainability strategy, visit the official event page.
