Athletics Ireland have selected a 35 strong team for the European Athletics U18 Championships which take place in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia on 18-21 July.
Their team is spearheaded by Conor Penney and Thomas Williams who lead the rankings heading into the championships in the men’s high jump and men’s hammer respectively.
Breadth of talent
It is testament to Ireland’s new breadth of talent that they have medal contenders in the field disciplines to compliment their more recent success in sprints and endurance.
Ireland has enjoyed some notable success at previous editions of this event, including Fintan Dewhirst who took silver in the men’s 400m hurdles (Jerusalem 2022), Gina Akpe Moses, women’s 100m silver and Molly Scott, women’s 100m hurdles bronze (both Tbilisi 2016).
Plus, Gyor 2018 medallists Rhasidat Adeleke (women’s 200m gold), Sophie O’Sullivan (women’s 800m silver) and Sarah Healy (women’s 800m and 1500m gold).
