The biggest ever Italian team will compete at the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships with 101 athletes selected for this year’s event which forms part of the multi-sport European Championships from 11-21 August.

The 101-strong team is replete with Olympic champions with Marcell Jacobs (100m, 4x100m), Gianmarco Tamberi (high jump) and Massimo Stano (20km race walk) all named in the team.

Stano won gold at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon last month in the 35km race walk but the Italian will contest the shorter distance in Munich twelve months after winning 20km race walk gold in Sapporo.

As well as Jacobs, the Italian team also includes the three other members of their gold medal-winning team in the 4x100m: Eseosa Desalu (200m, 4x100m), Filippo Tortu (200m, 4x100m) and Lorenzo Patta (4x100m).

Italy’s sole gold medal four years ago in Berlin came in the men’s marathon team race and their team of five athletes for the event includes Daniele Meucci, the 2014 European marathon champion.

One significant absentee from the Italian team is Olympic 20km race walk champion Antonella Palmisano due to injury.
