Making his debut at the distance, Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke Sondre Nordstad Moen’s Norwegian 10km record at the Hytteplanmila in Hole on Saturday (19) with victory in 27:54.

Due to his late arrival on the start-line, Ingebrigtsen began the race sporting his warm-up jacket but this didn’t slow the 19-year-old down too much.

The double European champion was just outside national record pace through the halfway point in 14:01 with the company of three other runners including his brother Filip Ingebrigtsen, Jakob's predecessor as European 1500m champion.

Filip dropped out of contention in the eighth kilometre as the pace began to pick up and Jakob brought Moen’s record of 27:55 into grasp with a scintillating final kilometre which he covered in 2:37. 'I did not come here to necessarily run fast but to fight for the victory and take part in a nice race,' said Jakob.

Not only was Jakob’s time a national record, it was also the fastest time by a European in 2019 as well as being a European U20 10km best in what could be his last race as a junior.

Eritrea’s Samuel Tsegay was a distant second in 28:39 with Filip Ingebrigtsen, who was suffering from breathing problems in the latter kilometres, third in 28:40.
