  • Jakob Ingebrigtsen smashes European U20 1500m record with 3:30.16

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen came tantalisingly close to breaking the sub-3:30 barrier but the 18-year-old still came away with a massive improvement on his European U20 record in the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday (5) evening.

Ingebrigtsen sensibly sat back off the startlingly fast pace in the early stages which saw Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot reach the 800m mark inside world record pace at 1:49.41. As Cheruiyot hit the bell, Ingebrigtsen was back in eighth-place but his circumspect approach paid off as he ran a charging last lap, passing six athletes - including his older brother Filip - to finish an excellent second.

As Cheruiyot held on to win in a world lead and meeting record of 3:28.77, Jakob moved from fourth off the final bend and into a clear second in 3:30.16, improving his European U20 record of 3:31.18 which he set in the Monaco Diamond League last year. He also moved to third on the world all-time U20 list and eighth on the European all-time senior list but he was just a fraction shy of Filip’s family record of 3:30.01.

“This is the kind of race that builds confidence. We want to battle with the best ones, this is why we come to Diamond League events,” said Jakob, the European 1500m and 5000m champion.

Jakob must surely believe a sub-3:30 clocking is already within his compass at this early stage of his burgeoning career but one athlete who has something even faster in mind this year is Filip who finished third in 3:30.82 - the second fastest time of his career thus far.

“As you can see, there aren’t many left in front of us,” he said. “Personally, I want to challenge the European record [3:28.81 to Mo Farah] this season and of course a medal in Doha. It is clear that achieving such performance so early in the season is very encouraging.”

Spaniards Adel Mechaal and Kevin Lopez set lifetime bests of 3:33.91 and 3:34.83 to finish eighth and tenth respectively with Great Britain's Jake Wightman in between them in 3:34.40.

Lisek clears a Polish record of 6.01m; business as usual for Lasitskene in the high jump

Piotr Lisek produced arguably the best vault of his career thus far in the pressure situation of a jump-off which was generated after Lisek and Sam Kendricks shared an identical card all the way up to 5.95m which they both cleared on their first attempts.

The height of 6.01m initially proved beyond Lisek and world champion Kendricks after their three regulation attempts but Pole had a fourth try as the competition went to a jump-off and the world silver medallist went clear on his first and only attempt at this uncharted height.

Not only did 6.01m represent a meeting record and world lead, Lisek also added one centimetre to his Polish record which he set two years ago. “This is one of the best days of my life. I’m so happy as I work so hard for these types of moments in life. We fight so hard at this level and to be able to beat Sam and Armand today is a dream,” he said.

In a high quality contest, European champion Armand Duplantis and world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie finished equal third at 5.81m - a season’s best by 35 centimetres for the Frenchman.

Mariya Lasitskene was victorious again in the high jump, clearing 2.02m on her third attempt before three tries as a prospective Russian record and meeting record of 2.07m.

Lasitskene would have won at 2.00m by virtue of a superior card but the world and European champion put the competition just beyond the reach of Belarus’ reigning world U20 champion Karyna Taranda who tied the national record with a first-time clearance at 2.00m which also represented a two centimetre lifetime best.

Taranda also finished two clear heights ahead of Ukraine’s Yuliya Levchenko which could be significant as the pair are due to clash at next week’s Gavle U23 European Athletics U23 Championships from 11-14 August.

Elsewhere, Spain’s Orlando Ortega won the 110m hurdles in a season’s best of 13.05 and there were also victories for Germans Christina Schwanitz in the shot put with 19.04m and for European champion Christin Hussong in the javelin with 66.59m.
