At the prestigious San Silvestre Vallecana in Madrid on Saturday (31), Mohamed Katir signed off his season with an excellent runner-up finish behind Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei.

Having won medals on the track in the 1500m at the World Athletics Championships and the 5000m at the European Athletics Championships, Katir showed his range by clocking a fast 27:19 for the 10km distance behind Cheptegei who returned from injury with victory in 27:09.

While the course in the Spanish capital is not eligible for record purposes, Katir’s time was the second fastest in history on all courses by a European distance runner behind Julien Wanders’ continental standard bearer of 27:13 which was set in Valencia in 2020.

Fellow Spaniard Jesus Ramos finished third in 27:52.

Klosterhalfen sets German 5km record of 14:52 in Barcelona

At the Cursa dels Nassos in Barcelona, there was talk that Olympic 1500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen would launch an attack on the world 5km record of 12:49 set by Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi in this race last year.

Sadly Ingebrigtsen was a late withdrawal due to illness which left Ethiopia’s Addisu Girma to take the victory in 13:25 ahead of Spain’s Ilias Fifa (13:30) and Switzerland’s Jonas Raess (13:31).

But there was very nearly a world record in the women’s race as Ejgayehu Taye took the victory in 14:21, falling just two seconds short of her world record which she set on this course last year.

Behind Taye, European 5000m champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen finished second in a German record of 14:52 with Norway’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal - who beat Klosterhalfen for the European cross country title last month - third in 15:06.

Runner-up finishes for European champions Crippa and Gega in Bolzano

At the BOClassic in Bolzano, European 10,000m champion Yemaneberhan Crippa closed his season with a runner-up finish in the 10km in 28:17 behind Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo in 27:14.

Crippa has two cross country races planned on Italian soil in early January as part of his build-up to his marathon debut in Milan on 2 April.

Fellow European champion Luiza Gega - who became Albania’s first ever gold medallist with victory in the 3000m steeplechase in Munich - also finished second in the 5km in 15:41 behind Ethiopia’s Dawit Seyaum in 15:33.

European cross country bronze medallist Isaac Kimeli from Belgium rounded out his season with victory over 8km in the Trier Silvesterlauf, winning in 22:18 ahead of European marathon champion Richard Ringer (22:20) and fellow marathon specialist Amanal Petros (22:22). Deborah Schoneborn won the women's 5km in 15:56.

Serbia's Elzan Bibic also won the Peuerbach Silvesterlauf in Austria over 6.8km in 18:55 ahead of Kenya's Isaac Too (18:57) and Austria's Andreas Vojta (19:06).
