Germany will be sending 80 athletes to compete at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto, Italy from 20-23 July.

One of the standout names on their team is multi-eventer Niklas Kaul, who is looking for his third major age-group title in as many seasons. The 19-year-old won the world U18 title in Cali, Colombia in 2015 before producing an excellent second day to win the world U20 title in Bydgoszcz, Poland last season.

Kaul leads the world U20 decathlon lists with a score of 7946 points ahead of the Czech Republic’s Ondrej Kopecky (7791 points). He is joined on the team by Manuel Wagner, who claimed gold at the inaugural European U18 Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia last summer.

Race walker Leo Kopp won the U20 10km title at the European Race Walking Cup in Podebrady in May and he will be looking to convert that form onto the track over 10,000m.

The Germans are typically strong in the throwing events and Henrik Janssen (discus) and Julia Ritter (shot) lead the European U20 rankings in their respective disciplines while on the track, Jennifer Montag (11.29) and European U18 champion Keshia Kwadwo (11.38) are ranked first and second in the 100m.

Milo Skupin-Alfa also won the European U18 title in Tbilisi last year in the high jump and has been named on the team for Grosseto.
