  • Kirt extends world lead in the javelin to 90.61m in Kuortane

Two days after surpassing the 90 metre-line for the first time in his career at the Ostrava Golden Spike, Estonia’s Magnus Kirt backed up that performance by improving his world lead in the javelin at the Kuortane Games, a European Athletics Classic Permit Meeting, on Saturday (22).

Kirt set a world-leading mark of 90.34m in Ostrava on Thursday night but that mark didn’t even last 48 hours as the European bronze medallist surpassed his national record again with 90.61m to defeat a field which included the two German throwers who beat him to the European title in Berlin.

Comparing his last two competitions, Kirt told Finnish television: “On Thursday it was easier because I felt more fresh. Straight after the competition in Ostrava I was doing some training and yesterday I did some training so that kept me in the tone but of course, after the fourth throw I started to feel tired and there was nothing else left.”

European silver medallist Andreas Hofmann, who has accrued two competitions over the 89 metre-mark already this season, was third with 82.82m with reigning Olympic and European champion Thomas Rohler seventh with 80.24m, his only throw over the 80 metre-line.

The Kuortane Games is closely associated with Aki Parviainen who set a still-standing stadium record and Finnish record of 93.09m at this meeting two decades ago and there was home success this time around as Oliver Helander, 22, achieved the second best result of his career with 86.93m to finish second.

Another athlete to continue her fine start to the season was Poland’s Karolina Koleczek who won two high quality races in the 100m hurdles.

One week after clocking a lifetime best of 12.75 in Chorzow ahead of reigning Olympic champion Brianna McNeal, Koleczek won the first race in a wind-aided 12.77 (+2.4) before improving to 12.67 in the second race albeit with a 4.0 m/s tailwind.

The British contingent also came away with a string of victories from Kuortane. David King won the first race of the 110m hurdles in 13.55 ahead of Elmo Lakka 13.59 - although the outcome was reversed in the second race with Lakka winning in 13.62 to King’s 13.69 - while Nick Miller left it late in hammer, producing his best mark of 75.90m in the sixth round to defeat Ukraine’s Myhaylo Kokhan with 75.56m.

Veteran triple jumper Nathan Douglas also displaced the opposition in the last round with 16.55m ahead of Finnish record-holder Simo Lipsanen - who went out to a wind-aided 16.38m - and European bronze medallist Dimitrios Tsiamis with 16.29m and fellow European bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw won the pole vault with 4.46m by ten centimetres from compatriot Sophie Cook.

Samuel Osewa also won the 100m in a wind-assisted 10.39.

Fajdek launches hammer to 80.82m in Nancy

Pawel Fajdek came within five centimetres of his world lead at the Meeting Stanislas in Nancy on Saturday (22), winning the hammer with 80.82m.

Fajdek set his world lead of 80.87m on home soil in Chorzow last weekend and the three-time world champion had the beating of European champion Wojciech Nowicki for the second meeting in the row with 80.14m.

The Poles have thoroughly dominated the event in the early part of the season and between them, they share the eight best throws on the 2019 world list.

There was also a good quality victory in the men’s discus for teammate and former world bronze medallist Robert Urbanek with 65.81m, his best throw since 2017.

On his 24th birthday Wilhem Belocian ran the joint second fastest time of his career with 13.28 to win the 110m hurdles and French teammate Orlann Ombissa-Dzangue won the 100m on home soil in 11.33.

Italy’s Luminosa Bogliolo also took a notable win in the 100m hurdles in 12.89.
