One of the first significant competitions on the calendar for throwers next season will be the European Throwing Cup which will be held in Leiria, Portugal on 13-14 March.

Many of Europe’s throwers should be well acquainted with the setting for next year’s European Throwing Cup already. Leiria has previously hosted this annual competition in 2014, 2015 and 2018 and will also stage the 2022 and 2023 editions.

The 2020 competition in Leiria was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The European Throwing Cup will be the principal curtain raiser for the majority of competitors, many of whom will arrive in Leiria with aspirations of securing qualifying marks for the upcoming major championships, namely the 2021 European U23 and U20 Championships in Bergen and Tallinn respectively as well as the Olympic Games in Tokyo which have been moved to late July 2021.

Two of the senior competition records on the books were set in Leiria the last time the Portuguese city held the event in 2018. Russia’s Aleksandr Lesnoy, who was competing as a neutral athlete, won the shot put with 21.32m but the weekend was highlighted by Johannes Vetter’s astonishing early season winning mark of 92.70m in the javelin - the 13th longest throw in history.

The javelin provided one of the highlights at the last edition of the European Throwing Cup in Samorin, Slovakia in 2019 when Belarus’ Tatsiana Khaladovich launched the spear to a world lead of 65.89m to beat the current European champion Christin Hussong from Germany.
