The collaboration between the Italian long jump legend and the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation (LOC) represents an important link between an icon of Italian sport and the biggest sporting event on Italian soil in 2024.

Since her retirement from competitive athletics in 2005, May has remained highly involved in the sport and she is looking forward to playing an integral role in upcoming institutional initiatives and communication activities to promote the championships.

“I am honoured to be an Ambassador of the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships. I am really excited to take part in the event with such an important role. It will be great to share this amazing experience with the new champions of Italian and international athletics,” said May.

Among her other achievements, May also won two Olympic silver medals in the long jump and bronze and silver medals at the 1994 and 1998 editions of the European Athletics Championships.

She still holds the Italian record in the long jump with 7.11m which dates back to the 1998 European Championships where she won silver behind Heike Drechsler.

May’s passion for athletics and long jump has also been passed on to her daughter Larissa Iapichino, who has followed in her footsteps and won her first senior medal last winter with silver in the long jump at the Istanbul 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
