Hungary’s Anita Marton won Olympic bronze last August with a national record of 19.87m in the final round and with the summer season fast approaching, the two-time European indoor champion is in brilliant form once again.

Leading going into the last round at the 10th edition of the Drazevina shot put meeting on Sunday (30), Marton produced an effort of 19.63m, the second best mark of her career. This was a world-leading mark and once more showed how much she has left for the final stages of competitions.

One man who knows all about peaking at the major championships is Marton's teammate Krisztian Pars, the Olympic and two-time European champion. He has never won a world title – he has silver from 2011 and 2013 – but this could be his year.

With a distance of 76.84m in Szombathely on Saturday (29) at the Savaria Cup, Pars produced his best result for 14 months while world U20 champion Bence Halasz, 19, produced with a personal best of 75.56m with the senior implement.

The strength of the hammer in Hungary was further shown with another personal best for their top U18 prospect Donat Varga, who reached 78.93m with the lighter implement.

Khaladovich approaches world-lead in Brest

European champion Tatsiana Khaladovich already holds the world-leading mark in the javelin with 65.88m and despite the cold and rainy conditions on offer at the Shukevich Memorial Meeting in Brest, the 25-year-old came close to that early season marker with a 65.60m performance on Friday (28).

There were also two standout performances from their U20 athletes. On the first day, 19-year-old hammer thrower Aliaksandr Shymanovich improved his best ever mark to 81.70m to break the national U20 record and move to sixth on the world U20 all-time lists with the 6kg implement.

On the second day, Dzmitry Karpuk broke the national U20 shot put record twice - with 20.06m in the first round and 20.34m with his third effort.

With these performances, Shymanovich and Karpuk will be among the favourites for gold in their respective events at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto this July.

“I am looking forward to the championships and hope to improve my results more to fight there for medals,” said Karpuk, speaking to the BFLA website.

Reh sets European-leading 5000m mark in Berlin

The prospect for future senior champions remains impressive in Europe and on the track, it was a quite a weekend for Germany’s double European U20 champion Alina Reh.

Not only is she is set to be a name at the European U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Reh also secured the 5000m qualifying mark for the IAAF World Championships in London. She broke her personal best by nearly half-a-minute with a European-leading time of 15:16:39 in Berlin.

After his success in the 60m hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Andrew Pozzi is looking good over the 110m hurdles as he showed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.

As Olympic champion Omar McLeod from Jamaica won in 13.04, Pozzi, who has a personal best of 13.19, was second in 13.24, the second fastest time of his career.

Former European indoor 1500m champion Jabok Holusa set himself up well for the outdoor season with victory at the 33rd Attnang road mile in 4:06.21 from Austria’s Andreas Vojta (4:08.64) and Britain’s John Ashcroft (4:08.65).

European marathon champion Daniele Meucci won on home soil at the Rimini Marathon in 2:16:06 while Portugal’s Doroteia Peixoto produced a lifetime best of 2:32:00 to win the Dusseldorf Marathon.

At the Hungarian 20km Walking Championships in Bekescsaba, Mate Hellebrandt (1:23:11) was crowned men’s champion and Viktoria Madarasz won the women’s title in 1:31:39. Rita Recsei broke the national U23 record with 1:34:43 in second.
