Expert-led webinars
The latest in a series of expert-led webinars features Dr Ciara Everard discussing “The power of stories and storytelling in supporting injured athletes” and Dr Charles Pedlar who explores the subject “The female athlete: 8 considerations for health and performance.”
Dr Everard is a former international 800m runner who represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
She is a Lecturer in Sport Psychology and Health Sciences at Roehampton University, UK and was joint winner of the 2023 PhD Award in the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology from The British Psychological Society.
Managing injuries through storytelling
In this webinar, she shares and discusses narratives of elite track athletes’ injury experiences. Sharing and discussing these narratives can help raise awareness of the multiple ways in which athletes experience injury and provide practical insights into the different ways of working with and supporting injured athletes.
She draws upon her latest research alongside real-world examples regarding the practical application of putting these sport injury narratives into practice.
Performance management with the menstrual cycle
Dr Pedlar is a Professor of Applied Sports and Exercise Science at St Mary's University, Twickenham, London and an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London.
A former research assistant for the British Olympic Association and also London Region Lead Physiologist at the English Institute of Sport working closely with British Athletics, he has worked closely with high performance for more than 20 years.
In this presentation, Dr Pedlar introduces some around training science and then explain how his work on the subject of the female athlete came about via his role as a physiologist working with endurance athletes.
Iron deficiency is a common issue for endurance athletes with profound impact on performance, and he explains how this relates to endurance training and blood loss via the menstrual cycle.
He goes on to describe how this work was the starting point for research around menstrual cycle symptoms and menstrual cycle dysfunction. Throughout the presentation he provides practical advice for monitoring and supporting female athletes.
