  • Peleteiro returns to competition with 14.13m on the road to Silesia 2023

On the road to Silesia, Ana Peleteiro made an excellent comeback at the Memorial Jose Antonio Cansino in Castellon, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger meeting, on Wednesday (14).

Less than six months after giving birth to her first daughter, Peleteiro bounded out beyond the 14 metre-line to 14.13m in her first competition since March 2022.

This bodes well for the European Athletics Team Championships in Silesia where Peleteiro will wear the Spanish vest once again. On the 2023 European list, Peleteiro is the top-ranked jumper among the nations who are part of the 1st Division which takes place between 23-25 June.

After the competition, Peleteiro wrote on Instagram: “If they told me this five months ago when I was leaving the operating room after having a cesarean to know infinite love for the first time, I would never have believed this.

“But I fought, sacrificed and I believe in myself. Plus I surrounded myself with the best team and together we made it.”

Peleteiro, who won the Olympic triple jump bronze in Tokyo two years ago, is coached by Ivan Pedroso in Guadalajara near Madrid where her training partners include world triple jump record-holder Yulimar Rojas.

Peleteiro wasn’t the only Silesia-bound Spaniard to impress with the European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division only eight days away.

On his comeback from a horrible fall in the 60m hurdles final at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Enrique Llopis won the 110m hurdles in a season’s best of 13.37 and Jael Bestue, who will be contesting the 100m in Silesia, won the 200m in a lifetime best of 22.54.

She also won the 100m in a wind-assisted 11.14.

Fatima Diame also won a high quality women’s long jump with a marginally wind-aided 6.84m - she also jumped a wind-legal 6.81m - to defeat Tessy Ebosele (6.80m) and combined events specialist Maria Vicente (6.77m).

Spain finished fifth at the last edition of the European Athletics Team Championships in 2021.
