European indoor and outdoor 1500m finalist Marta Perez stepped up in distance to win the senior women’s 7.9km at the Cross de la Constitucion de Aranda de Duero, a European Athletics Cross Country Permit Meeting, on Sunday (1) afternoon.

Perez, who has a 4:04.88 lifetime best for 1500m, covered the 7.91km course in 28:40 to dispatch a largely domestic field with Irene Loizate (28:52) and Tania Carretero (28:53) second and third respectively.

In the senior men’s 9.47km, Burundi’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo followed up his victory in Alcobendas last weekend with victory in Aranda de Duero. He clocked 28:32 to defeat his teammate Rodrigue Kwizera by one second with Eritreans Yemane Haileselassie (28:57) and last year’s winner Awet Habte (29:07) third and fourth respectively.

Ndikumwenayo competed for Burundi at the World Athletics Championships in Doha in October but the 22-year-old is based in Spain and runs for Playas de Castellon. He was fourth in the 5000m and second in the 5000m at the European Champion Clubs Cup for Castellon in late May.

Jesus Ramos was the leading Spanish finisher in fifth in 29:09, one place ahead of former European indoor 3000m champion Adel Mechaal in 29:17.

Wanders wins the Course de l’Escalade for the third time

With one week to go until the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, Switzerland’s Julien Wanders achieved another notable win at the Course de l’Escalade in Geneva on Sunday (1).

Wanders won the 7.3km race for the third successive year and his winning time of 20:39 was the fastest from his three victories. He also defeated Ethiopia’s Telahun Haile Bekele - the world leader over 5000m this summer at 12:52.98 - by fourteen seconds.

Wanders, who holds the European records over 10km and half marathon, is aiming for his first major medal in Lisbon on Sunday. He last competed at the championships in Hyeres in 2015 when he was still a junior.

Elsewhere, European 5000m silver medallist Eilish McColgan opened her winter season by setting a lifetime best of 31:48 to win the Percy Pud 10K in Leeds on Sunday morning and Italian-based Ukraine Sofia Yaremchuk won the Best Woman 10K in Rome in 32:45.
