A record of 85 people attended the fifth AthTech Data Conference at the Salini Resort, Malta from 22-23 September, as part of a supportive community of people who can exchange ideas and share knowledge about digitalisation in athletics.

What started as a small group finding solutions to improve data interfaces in athletics in 2016 has now expanded to a wider audience around the topics of global content management, sponsorship and social media in the sport.

Attendees at the event organised by European Athletics and OpenTrack included service providers, vendors and individuals, as well as representatives from Member Federations, World Athletics, who shared the latest developments in the sport at a global level as well as an update on data interface theme, and European Athletics’ long-standing partner EBU (European Broadcasting Union), who showcased some of their recent projects and innovations.

Since the very first edition, AthTech speakers have been composed of professionals presenting their technology and the latest developments mixed with representatives from Member Federations sharing their challenges and advice.

The topics covered in this edition of the conference included: digital storytelling and content strategy; the importance of social media; how visibility can generate sponsorship; data standards and management; the global calendar; streaming and audience measurement; innovation in athletics; and the power of AI in sport.

“The discussions and presentations were great and raised attention and questions, along with plenty of exchange, chat and tech conversation. I feel delighted to be surrounded by such a great bunch of motivated and dedicated professionals!”
