  • No stopping record-breaker Bukowiecki

If Konrad Bukowiecki thought that 2015 was the best year of his athletics life, he has not waited long to try to make 2016 even better.

Eight days in, the brilliant Polish shot-putter has already started rewriting history after breaking the world junior indoor record with the 6kg implement.

In Torun on Friday, Bukowiecki, 18, reached 22.48m in the third round of the competition and then went on to achieve three more fine efforts of 22.12m, 22.13m and 22.16m. Incredibly he had began the event with two fouls before his record-breaking moment.

Such was his success in 2015 that he was named European Athletics’ Male Rising Star at the Golden Tracks ceremony in Lausanne last October.

Bukowiecki will head into this year ready to build on what 2015 brought where he finished sixth at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague and won gold at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Eskilstuna.

In Prague he broke the European junior shot put record using the senior implement of 7.26kg with 20.46m before breaking the outdoor world junior all-time best with the 7.26kg shot with 20.78m in Zagreb last September.

Bukowiecki is the defending world junior champion - and with the event now being staged in front of his own fans in Bydgoszcz next summer, they could be set for something special.
