An international symposium on throwing events will be held from 29 November to 1 December 2013 at Tanhuvaara Sports Institute in Savonlinna, Finland.

The symposium, which is part of a series organised by European Athletics, will bring together a renowned group of top athletes, coaches and experts in throwing events. 

The main focus will be on themes related to javelin throwing with other throwing events also featured strongly in the presentations. 

Olympic champion hammer thrower Koji Murofushi will reveal the secrets of his long career and describe the future directions of training in his own sport. 

A presentation and demonstration by internationally renowned throwing coach Vesteinn Hafsteinsson of Iceland will provide a comprehensive perspective on the possibilities of shot put and discus throwing coaching today.  

The personal coaches of top Finnish duo Tero Pitkí¤mí¤ki and Antti Ruuskanen will shed light on coaching techniques for these athletes in their combined presentations.

Tero and Antti will give an impressive demo together, showcasing their special javelin-throwing abilities.

Kari Ihalainen and Riku Valleala will share their knowledge of javelin coaching and the biomechanics of throwing events.

Terseus Liebenberg, the most famous javelin coach in South Africa and a friend of Finland, is known to all throwers who took part in the camp at Potchefstroom. 

He will discuss the cornerstone of the rise of top female javelin thrower Sunette Vijoen, whom he coaches, and give his own opinions about coaching women’s throwing events. 

Liebenberg is also remembered as the coach of 1997 world gold champion Marius Corbet.

Russian newlyweds Maria Abakumova, who took bronze at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, and Dimitri Tarabin will also come to Tanhuvaara with their coach, former top thrower Heino Puuste of Estonia. 

They will hold a thorough demonstration on Saturday showcasing the most important exercises of the training season. 

Throwers’ health challenges and preventative measures will be highlighted in detail by expert doctor Harri Hakkarainen.

As either athletes or as personal coaches, the 11 presenters at the symposium have achieved a total of nine Olympic medals, 17 world championship medals and eight European Athletics championship medals, a total of 34 medals in adults’ outdoor athletics championships. 

The presentations at the symposium will be held in English with the most important points will also be presented in Finnish.
